We are going to be in Newport this weekend and we are looking at restaurants in the area to hit. We will have the kids in tow as well. Any suggestions?

Great food...
...at Sala's (Italian) on Thames Street (opens @ 5:00PM), The Smoke House Cafe on Scott's Wharf, and Moorings on Sayer's Wharf. The last two are right on America's Cup Avenue. We frequently go to Newport and these are our favorites. We usually stay at the Ida Lewis Yacht Club. Great facilities, a nice walk to town, and a terrific Sunday morning brunch. Salas' opens at 5:00. Again, plan to eat early, or plan to wait. We were there Saturday and we were able to seat a group of 14 people early. Later? - no way! Newport will be crazy this weekend (as usual), but it's a great place to visit.

The best bar stool in RI...
...is at the deck bar on the raised porch at the National Hotel on Block Island. Watch the ferries come and go, the people walking by and the view over RI Sound towards Newport (20 miles) is incredible.

The White Horse Tavern
This is billed as the oldest tavern in the nation. It's a bit upscale for dining, but it's a great place to stop for a drink as well. The building is an old timber frame structure, the original part of which was built in the 1600's. It's a great look into our past... Joe S/V Charis

with kids...go early or you'll have a long wait. Try Grappa, across from the Newport YC (near the Marriot)- Very Good Italian fare. Also, 22 Bowen on Bowens Wharf, right in the thick of America's Cup Ave. Very Key - they both take dinner reservations, which is unheard of in Newport. In Jamestown, across the bay, try Trattoria Simpatico. They also take a res'y. Jamestown is a very nice "small scale" Newport. To me, it is a nice change from the crowds... S/V Hawaii Kai
