I don't know what type of fittings you have but if you have O'rings on a fitting, which will go flat over time, you do not use teflon tape. O'ring fittings use the O'ring as the seal and the thread is straight and the threads are used to tighten the fitting against and compress the oring. Teflon tape will only keep the threads from completely tightening or worse, a piece of tape gettng under the oring and no amount of tightening will let it seal.
Telfon tape is for Pipe thread only. The threads themselves are the sealing surface. That is why they're tapered. The teflon acts as a lubricant and seal. Even then small pieces of teflon will break off and go down stream. If there is something down stream that will be harmed, don't use the tape. A teflon seal that comes in a tube is better. So don't use tape on say a fuel line because you can jam up an injector.
