I want to add some serious ah to my house bank but am curious where to put them.

In the rear lazerret is looking like the most ideal spot but not sure quite how to do it or where.

I was hoping to try and fit the 105's but am not sure if thats going too big.

Anyone have any similar installs?

Cheers,
-Jared

Jared:

There is a platform that is located in the starboard lazarette. I think you can place 4 6vdc batteries in there or just about any combination of batteries that you may want to use. Our H'31 had 2 batteries mounted over the shaft log and we had a seperate battery for our refrigeration in the aft lazarette over on the port side.

Not familiar with 31 layout, but PO on our boat had constructed a shelf under the nav table that left foot room on the floor, allowed batteries at shin level.

Aren't you going to have to consider the weight issue? My batteries were located opposite the fuel tank so the two would counter one another. Seems to me you're going to position the batteries on a side of the boat without other heavy items.

I just received the book Endless Summer which most of you probably know about (couple cruising to bahamas from florida in there 83 Hunter 31) and it shows how they did it.

Two 6 volts in port side settee just forward of nav station and two in the starboard aft lazzeret which looks to be on top of the hot water heater or in its place. Surprising to see they didnt use the spot over the prop shaft.

As far as weight goes I like how they have it setup but I'd probably still use the spot above the packing gland.

My current thinking is to have a similar setup but with 2 12 volts in parrallel over packing glade for backup bank.

For the 6 volts I suspect they have 2 wired in series wired in parellel to the other 2 in series? That would make it a 12 volt load but with 2x the AH. This would kinda balance out as far as weight. I have a heavy dive tank I can move around also to counter balance heavy stuff.

Man this stuff is getting to be a real spaghetti mess of wires and I havent even added solar or wind yet!

Thanks again for all the feedback folks!

Thanks Steve, I found it.

BTW: what ever happened to Roger? I haven't seen a post from him in a long time and his website doesn't appear to be around anymore either.

Hi Jarad. I to have been thinking about upping my AH on our 87 Hunter 31. I don't know about the older 31's, maybe Steve or someone else could help here. Our 31 has a battery location over the packing shaft, as mentioned, and in the starboard lezerett there is a built-in battery box I call it in the inner hull lining. I haven't measured how big a battery will go in this little place, but if you are planning on putting in 6v batteries, I know they weight alot. Around 100 lbs each I think. That is an awful lot of weight to be putting on the starboard side of the boat. I am leaning towards the way Endless Summer did theirs. But let us know how you make out.
