Personally I like the KISS rule for anchoring. Not that more complicated anchoring systems don't have their role. But simple to retrieve is a big plus for me - especially in the vicinity of other boats.

I'll bet it's a bareboat charter

As my title says guys,

I thought bareboat charter people are supposed to be checked out first as to their experience. Unless licensed.

I've been in anchorages where I've watched idiots like these. The really sad part of this video was there seemed to be NO feeling of urgency from the "tools" onboard. Could they move any slower?

I wish the video started sooner to see just what they were thinking/doing/approaching, before the s**t hit the fan.

This has been posted before. As I understand it, the boat that seems to be the culprit here were actually dragged over by another boat prior to the video. So their anchor was fouled by another offender. Also, I think there were lines in the water, near their prop. Once that was the case there was very limited number of things that they were able to do. Message: don't judge a book by its cover?

Don't judge a book by its cover, but you can probably judge a video by its content.

Rick, a long time charter for hire captain in the Caribbean, filmed this over two years ago and it was all over TTOL. He is now spending more time on his video business than chartering.

"They hit the bow of the trimaran first and effectively cut his mooring pennant with their prop. The owners saw it happening and got back to the boat in time to get the motors? running and underway.

After that, the monohull carried on forward, still under full sail, and went across the bow of another monohull, 'Folie a Deux', and picked up his anchor chain with their rudder. After being dragged around for 20 minutes, 'Folie a Deux' finally cut their anchor chain loose and made a run for it.

Then they took the Sunsail cat in tow.. under power, so yes, they still had run of their engine. The captain never left the helm the entire time, even after there were no sails up and no? engine running, so not sure what he thought he was accomplishing there... and that guy on the bow must have coiled that piece of rope 30 times over...

I still can't believe they waited until AFTER they had hit all 6 boats before they finally brought out any fenders!"

Have to agree. I was there in February on a bareboat. Had to fill out a resume, however I could have put anything on it. Was never asked any questions about handling a boat or sailing. I had 3 years of sailing , but no certificates to prove it. I was honest in my resume and indicated no experience with a catemaran. Well it came back that I could rent up to a 36' cat. I've never even been on one. I sure wouldn't allow my boat to be used as a rental.
Also watched a similar situation in Sopers Hole. Wind was howling between the hills and sure enough some guy comes in with full sails. Heads up wind, luffs the sails, loses all speed, wind catches the sails, lost control of the boat, and just misses a cat by about a foot. Couldn't believe it.

Is all the cruising in the BVIs ... that brainless or crowded, or are there ways to avoid the nutters and stay sane? That video reminded me more of mall parking than relaxing on a boat.

I had one genius with a big boat and a soup-spoon for an anchor drift down on us once during the CNE Toronto airshow. Just smiled and shrugged, seemed incapable of simply starting his engine and motoring off of us. Grrr.

I've had my boat struck twice in the BVI, both times while at anchor, or on moor, and both times by people who had no idea how to handle a large keelboat in tradewind conditions. In one incident a dude drove his 50ft Beneteau charter into my bow roller (my hook was down) and routed a 40 ft x 1/2" gouge through topside and hull windows of his rental boat. I believe that 2year old boat was totaled. Sadly, the place has become crowded with charter boats crewed by credit card captains.
