Where do you keep your boat when you're "home?" Do you have a permanent slip, a subleased slip, a mooring? Maybe you keep your boat on a trailer or on stands at your house, or even dry storage? Some lucky folks even have a private dock at their home. Do you? How long has your boat been where it is now? Would you move it if you could? (Discussion topic and quiz by Trevor MacLachlan)

One of the lucky ones

I live on a canal right off Lake Ponchatrain, and have the dock right behind the house. Been here going on four years, and before that lived on the boat for a little over a year. And this is about as good as it gets.

Another lucky one:

My slip is at the foot of the stairs - 30 seconds from my home. Unfortunately health issues will force me to sell my boat this year, then I will own a useless 40' strip of water! Anyone want to buy a Beneteau First 35?

two homes

I live in New England so we have two homes for my boat. One is for 6 Mo. on the mooring at the marina "downtown" about 15 minutes away which I wouldn't change . The other home is my back yard on the trailer for the 6 Mo.off season.I love that also, its my view from my desk window and I can work on it whenever I want to . Its always ready to launch on May first..Smitroe

Works for me.

The first couple of years I hauled out on the shore of the Back Harbour along with another sailboat and other small boats. Then a commercial whale-watch tour operator started putting his 2 large boats there and then repairing them each spring, hammering, sawing , fibre-glassing. This upset a neighbour and queered the pitch for all and we had to move. Now I'm at the other end of town, (same distance tho), at a self-storage place which also houses our railway museum. We have working S and HO layouts showing the history of railroading in Nova Scotia back in the days when we had railroads in Nova Scotia. Worth a visit for any prospective tourist. But I digress. I've been there 3 winters, get to use the electricity for springtime jobs and it's reasonably secure. $245 for the winter and leave my trailer there in the summer. Barry

Two moorings and a boat yard

We keep our boat on a mooring and like the safety & security of it. We do have two moorings though. Our first mooring is in front of the house & neighborhood and is our storm mooring. There are only about three or four boats kept out front so the risk of one breaking off in and hitting ours is very, very low. This area is also much better protected, less fetch and a sand beach to land on just in case, than at the marina/boatyard is. Our mooring at the marina is the one we use most often, during the peak season, due to the launch service... In the winter the boat resides at a boat yard about two miles from our house so she's easy to get to. We brought our boat home one winter and it was far to big for the yard in our small coastal neighborhood. I won't do that to the neighbors again unless it's absolutely necessary for a major project or something..

One of the lucky ones

I could say that I'm one of the lucky ones in that my slip AND winter storage location is less than two miles from my home. During the season I'm blessed with a key-card protected deep-water slip well protected from the open waters of Lake Erie. During the winter my cradled boat rests well up the river out of the worst of winter's wind. It's a luxury I gladly pay for. Bill on STARGAZER

Good setup

My boat sits at a well protected dock up 18 Mile Creek on Lake Ontario. In the winter I store at the yacht club on the other side of the creek. The club charges $16 a foot for haulout, launch, and mast. My home is 3 miles away and I can literally get to the boat in 5 minutes. Western NY is a great place to live if you don't need a job. I was able to buy a lake front home for 1/3 less than what we got for an average home in the Chicago suburbs. No traffic, no stop lights and great people!

I keep my boat

in Shoreline Marina in downtown Long Beach. I've been in that marina for about fifteen years now, first with my Catalina 30 and now with my Bene 40. It's about 25 minutes from my house and here in So Cal we can sail year-round.

On the shores of Fern Ridge Lake 30 minutes from my home in Eugene, OR. The yacht club has beautiful grounds, water and power at the slips, and lots of events. Fern Ridge is a Army Corps of Engineers flood control lake. It is full for boating from Apri 1 until October 1. Off season the boat sits on her trailer at the yacht club grounds. Except, of course, when we haul her to the San Juans for cruising.
