where is he factory depth transducer?

I've traced the wire down to behind the engine but then runs into one of the "holes" that are under the fiberglass and im not sure where it leads to. I need to check near the strut bolts are located. Seems like a weird place to put it with the turbulence from the keel but what do I know.
Anyone trace it before?

Thanks again!

I don't know about your particular boat but...

...depth transducers should be forward of the keel so you know the depth where you are going, not where you have been. Have you looked under the floorboards forward of the keel?

I've got ones there also but its for speed. I think they might of got them backwards while installing at the factory.

I think the depth one is aft but in front of the prop by a few feet but haven't confirmed yet.

I found the same issue - the previous owner thought that the transducers were bad - because I found three of them rolling around near the prop strut attachment point.
I had the back holed sealed up and ran the depth sensor forward to the paddle wheel through hull, near the holding tank in the bow. I use the GPS for a speed indicator
and depth finding. I hope that helps. I also had two of the gate valve through hulls replaced to the ball style seacocks at the engine cooling and the sink. It is a wise investment.

Mine is located aft of the engine near shaft and adjacent to the raw water intake sea clock. Accessible from port quarter berth by removing plywood access piece under cushion.

Very coincidental with this post. My transducer has suddenly stopped working, and maybe someone can shed some light on it. At present it is showing two dashes instead of a reading, something it normally does when the depth is over 100 feet. I also have a 1984 Hunter 31, and suspect that, as earlier stated, the sensor is nearer the rear of the keel than the fore. Any ideas before I start tracing wires?

My depth gauge usually only did the dash dash thing over 240 ft.

Did you recently repaint the bottom? I noticed some issues with it after I did then it started working a few weeks later.

I suspect its next to the strut. Access through the aft port quarter berth if thats what you were asking.

I traced one of the wired to the starboard "dungeon" then down behind the built in battery box thought I haven't traced it farther than that.

The bottom was painted a few months ago, and my diver said they had painted over it. He cleaned it off a few weeks ago, and no luck yet. Maybe I will give it a couple more weeks and hope for the best. Thanks though

If it's the original data marine unit suggest contacting DMI for troubleshooting. www.dmimarine.com. Phone 774-213-9744. I had them service both original knot and depth equip 2 years ago on my '84 and both are fine now (knock on wood)

Ok, I think I have located transducer in head on starboard side in sump. It says " hand tighten" and is a black plastic fixture with a wire running into it. So is the glass cover you can see on the underside of the hull a permanent fixture, and this part unscrewable, or do I need to get the boat out of the water to remove this to service? Picture attached

Ian, unlike speed transducers, though-hull depth sounder transducers are generally permanent fixtures and you need to get the boat out of the water to remove them. Picture of yours makes me think that's the case. Good luck

That is the same as mine on the H31. Recently had to replace wood backing plate and had to pull the boat. I believe Claude is correct in that unlike the speedo there is no temp plug to put in its place. Suggest contacting Data Marine from my earlier post here and they can advise the best way to handle replacement.

Thanks guys. Will follow your advice on this one. Very wary of holes in hulls!!
