I'm transporting an O'day from Stamford Ct to Raritan Bay NJ on Saturday, Sept. 15th. Does anyone know of a marina on the East River where I can spend the night of the 15th?

City Island or Liberty Landing

I don't recall any marinas actually on the East River. You will probably need to stop at the western end of Long Island Sound ( City Island is a good stop) or continue through Hell Gate and the East River to New York City, where Liberty Landing is a good stop. When returning to NJ from the Hunter rendezvous in Mystic this Summer we sailed from Branford Conn. to Liberty Landing in Jersey City in about eleven hours. It was a long day but we wanted to catch the current going west through Hell Gate at about six that evening. Check the tide tables to see when the current in Hell Gate is running in your favor that day and let that be your guide as to whether you stop in City Island or go through to Liberty Landing the day you are leaving.

One marina

There is one marina on the East River at 23rd Street owned by the NYC Dept. of Marine and Aviation. Seaplanes base there and some large party boats. No transients unless the Coast Guard drags you in there in an emergency as they did us once. The reception was grudging. Your best bet in your situation is World's Fair Marina at the foot of Flushing Bay. $1 a foot a night, I believe. Easy access to the City via subway. See a ball game at Shea Stadium, five minute walk. One hour or less to Hell Gate. If we hit the currents right we can make Sandy Hook in four hours in a sailboat. It's another two hours west from City Island or Pt. Washington but worth it to get a jump on the next leg as well as the chance to get out and about quickly.
