When I was a Hunter dealer, I made it a point not to say who or where I was at out of respect for the Hunter dealer network.. Since I am no longer a Hunter dealer and would like for my old customers to know where I am at, I am in Zebulon, NC at 919-404-1550. I will be glad to answer questions on the small boats if the responses in the forum do not fully explain a repair. Please respect me on this as too many will call on minor details and I had to withdraw from the forum several years ago. Crazy Dave Condon American Marine & Sail Supply, inc. 919-404-1550

Welcome back

I heard rumors about a mysterious and helpful dealer who knew everything about the 26/260 but his input ended about the time we started following this site a few yrs ago. Hope you don't get inundated but you sure are welcome. As these boats get seasoned since their production ended, there have been many here who find ways to get the most out of these trailer sailers. Hope NC is treating you well and that business is going good. Thanks for your input here. Michael

Here's a question Dave

And thanks for your advice to this forum. I bought a 98 H-260 last fall and one of the first things I discovered was how weak the lifeline stantion mounts were in the way they are mounted. Yesterday, I noticed another H260 at our marina and noted the stantions had reinforcing strut that braced the stantion off the coach roof. Not sure the year model of that boat, but did Hunter recognize this problem and correct it? Did they offer a change out plan for previous model owners? Thanks

Was the boat a 26 or 260?

If it was a 26 instead of the 260, the 'reinforced struts' are actually part of the Mast raising system. The 26, 23.5, and 19 all uses removable cables instead of the 'struts' that the 240 and 260 have. The cables connect to the mast and the 'reinfornig struts' on the stantions closest to the mast. The 19, 23.5, and 26 were made before the 240 and 260. I've owned a 19 and a 23.5. I think the 19 was a great boat. Mike

Give me a clue

Mike, I am not sure. Not sure either I know the difference between a 26 and and 260. Someone give me a couple of things to look for (besides the obvious stern ID) and I will check it out next time at the lake.

26 or 260

The Hunter 260 was first introduced in 1998. The hull and deck are the same excpet for the cockpit and windows. If exiting the transom, the 260 will have a step off, the 26 did not. Also, the 260 was designed to accomodate wheel steering. A few of the former 26 sailboats had wheel but not many as not many how to put them on properly. The 260 has a place for a helmsman seat which is the lid for the gas locker. You can also tell by the floor of the cockpit because the 260 had interchangeable floors as the one for the wheel steering had a round raised area to accomodate the wheel steering that is reinforced underneath. I hope this helps you on determining which boat. There were a few 26 versions that were 1998 models as I had the last one and the first 260.

It's a '99 Hunter 260

The boat with the improved stronger stanchions is a 1999 Hunter 260. The owner was at the marina this weekend and got to talk to him.

What do I five up if I buy a 19 over a 23.5 ? (1995 models)

What will I give up if I buy a 19 over a 23.5? Cockpit size....Speed....Stability? Thanks, CH

simple

Ok, you got me as I know the boats well and it was my decision to pull the plug on the 19. The cockpit, speed and stability are greater on the 23.5 than the 19. It takes nearly the same amount of time but a few minutes less to pack up a 19 than 23.5. It all depends on what you want to do. If out at the coast, maybe the 23.5. Why the plug was pulled on the 19 was difficult to do but it had to do with cost which was near that of the 23.5 plus we sold too many of the 23.5 over the 19. Otherwise, the 19 was a good little boat. Davecondon@mindspring.com

19 vs 23.5

I had a real hard decision since I really liked the 19. But in the end my wife liked the larger cockpit of the 23.5, and visualizing the son's and wives joining us on the boat. You can sit 4 REAL comfortable in the wide cockpit of the 23.5 without all the legs getting in the way. The boats handle very similiar, but I liked the fact you can use a smaller tow truck to pull the 19. It was a hard decision, and still when I'm out alone, I wish I had the 19. When we go on some cruises though, the 23.5 is real nice. I'm racing the MUG race to Jacksonville this weekend with my 2 sons, and its nice to have the room. My take, is if you don't "NEED" the room, then the smallest boat that suits your needs is the best. The 19 is also easier to wash, wax, scrub, store, buy sails for, needs smaller anchors, uses a smaller motor, burns less gas etc, etc. Bottom line, My wife said get the 23.5..Yes dear:)
