Another newbie to sailing here, but having fun learning!!! I bought a 76 O'day a month ago and have figured out through trial and error how to rig my sails and run all the rigging except the jiffy reefing. Ok, here is what I have. On the aft end of the boom I have about a 25 foot line that is attatched about 8 inches from the end of the boom. I know it is the jiffy reefing line but for the life of me I cannot figure out HOW to run that line through the cringles in such a way as so it makes sense and reefs the main properly. My equipment, that I can find (meaning the stuff that is not used by the sails or halyards) include the line, a block on the opposite side from where the line is attached to the boom, a horseshoe thingy about halfway down the boom that is the proper diameter for the line to run through and a free block on either side of mast at the base. Oh yeah, and of course, two cringles one foreward on the sail and one aft. I have searched the web looking for some helpful hints, but have found about six billion different ways to rig the reefing lines. So figured I best go ask the experts...and where else would you go but to the o'day owners site. I am sure this is not that hard, but I'm stumped...any help would be a blessing. I really don't want to go any farther from the harbor until I can reef the sail quickly and safely.

Lets try this . Take the line up through the rear reefing cringle ,down to the block .From there it goes forward to the forwrd reefing point.The line then goes through the forward crinlg then down to the block and finally cleated. This is close to how I did mine.The big differance was that I installed another block on the boom where the line goes back up to the forward cringle. I then onstalled a cleat on the boom . I too have lines and blocks that came with my boat that I have no idea what they are for. That is a great thing about buying used.You are completly free to change everything until it makes sense to you.
