I do remember taking it off the aft end of the boom, when I first got the boat, but didn't use it last season (couldn't find it)...

It either gives purchase to my outhaul (which is now 1:1 and not sure that's correct rigging) or... It adjusts my topping lift, where at present I have a 12" "jumper rope" from steel topping line to boom plate...??

It can be many things and used for many purposes.....Use how you see fit....Cuningham, Out-haul,Down-haul, topping lift, Preventer, Keeping a hatch open, Motor lift, Small boat boom Vang.....What ever the hell you want!:wow:

I think I'll use it to keep the boom out of the way when at anchor and the rum is flowing...

Just remember to slack the line when sailing. Don't ask me how many times I've forgotten until I get that "DUH!" moment.

my wild guess is that it was used as a tension adjuster for the split backstay.....

Extra tackle ...

Squidd, that's way too much tackle for a topping lift. Here's a typical installation for a boat our size. I don't worry about that tiny little block flopping around a bit and the vinyl covered wire is too thin to be any concern either. There is no need to detach it and move it forward. In fact if you insist on detaching it, why not move it to the aft rail? The only thing on mine that I would change is I should have moved the cleat well aft so I could cleat it from the cockpit instead of having to climb forward. Oh well, just one of those nuisances that I don't correct because the extra work keeps me in shape! Better yet, replacing the soft vang for a rigid vang and eliminate the TL would be a better option!

That's what mine looks like, though I really don't need 2 parts on that tiny boom and sail. But I pass the live end through an eye strap, with a stopper knot on the end, and for sailing I just cut it loose so the stopper knot and eye straps at each end define the lowest point for the boom. To raise it, I pull as much out as I can and just wrap it around a small cleat on the boom that's otherwise unused, just to get the boom out of the way. I could do it without the block, of course, with just a lower position at the end of the line for sailing, and taking some turns on a cleat to raise it, but it makes the boom sit rotated from being supported on only one side, and it annoys my symmetry sensibilities. :snooty:
