Which leads me to a question

Your at the fuel dock which is on your starboard. A big expensive powerboat pulls up to fill up just before you leave right behind you. He is going to be there a while. There are boats circling wanting to get fuel. The wind is blowing 20 knots from port to starboard. Your at the end of the dock and just beyond the dock are rocks. To add to all this, your single handling and all the pump out guys are helping the big powerboat guy because big powerboat guys tip good. What do you do?

Why spring lines were invented

Attach a line to your rear starboard cleat. Double it over a dock cleat well forward of your bow. Make sure you have a good fender at the broadest part of your hull on the starboard side. Reverse hard. Your bow will swing out to port. When it has turned about 25 or 30 degrees, rudder hard over, throttle forward, and retreive the spring as your motor by.

Jeese Franklin you better have the answer

OK single handing, bow line cleated off at boat, led around forward dock cleat, back under forward horn on bow cleat than back to cockpit, with a couple of turns around sheet winch. Cast off other lines and reverse and stern should walk away from dock. If your 25 knts wind has you pinned to dock, then to to neutral, slack some line and go into forward and se if you can spring bow downwinde around end of dock, then peddle to the metal in reverse and cast off your line and hope it clears the dock cleat. Of course I would never try to dock with 25knots blowing me into the dock, Oh, I see your wind was only 20knts, no big deal, just hang the double berth matress over the side.

Never needed fuel bad enough to go to the

fuel dock on Sunday afternoon with a twenty knot breeze.

Good thing it wasn't real

ok...it was partly. The difference was that there wasn't any boats waiting so I just waited until the powerboat finished and then backed out but remember asking myself what I would have done if there were boats waiting. This thread reminded me of it.

A boat 'turns' about its .....

... Center of Lateral Resistance (CLR), usually located at about ~30-40% (cord length) aft of the keel leading edge.
