Fenders. The bigger the better when you're at the dock. But underway, they're a big pain in the backside. Where you stow yours while underway?

One there, and two here
I put one in the aft starboard lazerette, and two in the port lazerette, and there is still room for alot more stuff. Thanks Hunter for those REALLY BIG transom lockers. Mark Johnson

In the rack
On the L37 the cockpit lockers have limited space for large objects. So there is a double rack on the stbd stern rail. I also tie one inside the stern rail, resting on the combing. The two larger fenders can fit on deck pinched between the shrouds and the cabin top (and also tied to the handrails).

In a 26 foot boat....
..........we put them any where we can! Actually the fenders we have (4) have found a home under the table on the cabin sole. Underway they reside in that spot and if we raft up at night of course they are utilized. If not they are really not in the way. Space.......it's always at a premium because of all the stuff we carry w/ us. Walt J Shammah

On our Hunter 33.5 (1090), we hang 4 of them in the 'systems locker' under the starboard cockpit seat. They are there along with shorepower cable, water hose, spinnaker sheets, and extra dock lines. They seem to fit OK but room is limited.

If out for a weekend they are stowed in the stern locker (H31). If I'm on the ocean for some time, any fenders aboard the vessel are deflated and stored in a remote location such as the anchor or anchor rode locker.

soft hanger
I sewed a couple of mesh and sunbrella devices that hang on the upper lifeline at the rear of my boat. Each has pockets for two large fenders plus one for docklines, etc.. The blue matches the other blue canvas on my boat. Once underway, one of us unclips the fenders and stores them out of the way.

big lazerette
Our h23 has a large (the kids played there underway while they were younger) lazerette under the port seat and cockpit sole. We put the fenders in so they stand up and can be easily gotten to. Jim Kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo

When I was taught sailing. It was made clear that all fenders should be stowed while underway. Of course, I knew better and being lazy left a couple hanging on my first solo trip out to the Golden Gate Bridge from the Alameda Estuary. This was also my first taste of the incredible wind coming through the "slot" of the golden gate, and I was suddenly overwhelmed, and being inexperienced the lazy sheet whipped aroune and cought up with the fender- result I could not roll in the roller furling for reefing. After this wild and frigthening ride, I have always religiously stowed the fenders, even on daysails. THey are a nuisance above deck on my boat so they are either put in a lazerette or (temporally in the pilothouse under the companionway steps. However, I find that if a fender is stinky with growth on the bottom, I hang over the transom. One last thing, fenders do make great floats. On my one big ocean trip, I had a sea anchor stowed in the anchor bow chain locker and attached to the anchor (that, with a lenght of chain acted as a catenary. A couple of fenders then made the float from this. I never had to use it , but the fenders did serve some use.

If we're just daysailing from port A to port B, we usually toss the fenders into the shower, which doubles as a wet locker on our 410.

Leave 'em hangin'
Just leave 'em hanging over the side. Doesn't everybody do it? That way, you don't have to worry about where to store them, plus it gives you the added benefit of keeping the boat from "leaning over" to far.

Mark, I used the pfifertex (sp?) material from Sailrite and standard Sunbrella from same source in captain navy. The sunbrella is a foot or so higher than the pockets so it can loop around lifeline and attach with two rows of 2 inch velcro plus a couple of snaps. The pockets are deep enough and large enough around for my 12"d fenders to store easily. The mesh is on the sides and bottom. The top of my large fenders hang between the tops aln lower lines and hang down a couple of feet or so. The mesh allow water to drain and lines or other stuff stored to dry.

Fenders gotta go!!
I personally find 'hanging' fenders on boats under sail or power (unless in the process of docking) quite offensive. It's not all about performance (and you will lose 1/20 of a knot on either tack dragging a couple of fenders with you), but esthetics, too. It just lacks seamanship --it's that simple!! Fender stowage
Good question. I have been dealing with this problem for sometime. Currently I stow them in soft hangers near the stern. This is not the best solution, but the best one I have come upon.

When left hangin, they are commonly referred to as "Marina Del Ray" racing stripes! (powerboat reference of course).
