Hello Again everyone, I wanted to see where Hunter Owners sail these fine boats. Are these boats good out in the bay or the ICW? Just trying to gather as much information on the Hunter 23.5 as I can. Thanks

Chesapeake and ICW

Mostly we sail Ninkasi ,our H33.5, on the mid to lower Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Spent 10/07 to 06/08 doing the ICW and inland waters of Florida. We hope to do the ICW and Keys next year (09).

Hunter 23.5 Beaufort, SC
Anywhere I have time to trailer it

I've sailied this boat in Pensacola, FL, ICW, Atlantic (NE FL), the Chesapeake Bay, Fl Keys, Lake Murray, SC, and a few other places. After living in Beaufort for a year, you'd think I would have gone sailing here, but I haven't....yet. Next week I head for the Columbus Day Regatta in Miami.

Where do you live? There is a good chance there is a H23.5 owner close by that would show you their boat.

If you click on the 'Owners Directory', you can insert '23.5' in the 'model' cell. It will give you a lot of 23.5 owners.

Good luck in your search,

Mike

LI Sound & Lake Champlain

The Admiral & I grew up on the CT coast, so we love sailing on LI Sound & moored our 23.5 there this past season from July 4th to Labor Day. In '07 we were fortunate enough to have free access to a slip on Lake Champlain for 4 weeks & sailed there, plus a couple of weeks on LI Sound.

With our previous boat, a Sandpiper 565 (18.5'), we used to do a lot more lake daysailing, primarily Lake Sunapee in NH, but we've started to get a bit lazier about launching & retrieving in a single day since we acquired Grasshopper. The extra 5' isn't the issue, just inertia!

We're still debating next season, but we may try to "dry moor" on Champlain for a month -- leave it on a trailer in a yard rigged. While less convenient than having a slip or mooring, it's a much, MUCH cheaper way of not having the hassle & expense of trailering & rigging each time we use it. Then we might bring it down to LI Sound for another month later in the season & put out the mooring again.

Maine Coast

Oh yeah. The PO sailed Grasshopper for 10 seasons on the Maine Coast. Not exactly sure which part.

For what it's worth, while we know plenty of folks sail these in the Gulf & in the Atlantic off the East Coast, we feel much better about being in more protected areas like the Sound & Champlain. The 23.5 is by no means an ocean-going vessel. Sure, you can get into trouble and/or drown just as easily in protected waters. Still, when I listen to NOAA radio predict 2'-3' seas in the Sound but 3'-5' seas, or worse, by Block Island, my bowels get a little loose!
