I'm trying to sell my 1972 Crown 28 and I'm getting that it's just too old for anyone to want. It worked fine for me - I sailed it all the time until I bought my "new" (1976) boat.

I'd hate to junk the engine (2009 Yanmar 2GM20F), but it would cost me $600 or so to remove it and right now I don't trust my salesmanship enough to expect I'd get anything for it. Ditto the sails, GPS, Autohelm, stove, heater...

So what do you do with a boat nobody wants? I suspect it would cost me a lot to dispose of it, but it will cost me $4000 in Insurance and Moorage to keep it. What do I do?

Strip it and scuttle it at sea. Beyond 25 miles.

Yes, absolutely give it a try. But you will might be amazed how many donor-boat accepting non profits will no longer accept older boats with close to zero overall equity (or below). Just too many of them.

There are donation middlemen; most are just fly-by-nights that ebay it no reserve, or scrap it. In any case you get a receipt for whatever it 'sold' for.

As you have found, having a new $4k motor does not make it worth $4K.

Interesting, in some countries (like France) there is a hefty and mandatory disposal fee for old boats. Towards the end of their life, NO ONE wants to own them.

Down here there are many organizations that accept boat donations for tax credit...... Sea Scouts over in Marina del Ray, for instance.... Boy Scouts in Newport Beach.

There are also salvage companies, like Minney's Yacht Surplus in Costa Mesa, that you could part out or sell the whole thing.

Yellow pages for salvage or boat donations might be a good place to start. The motor is definitely worth something.... also the rudder, mast and other spars are hard to find items that you see people searching for here all the time.

Try S.A.L.T.S. in the Vancouver phone book. Other than that put an ad in Kijiji with pictures. Someone's gotta want it.

I've had ads in Kijiji, Craigslist and Local posters for over a month now. The survey done last year valued it at $11,000, but I can't get any response even for $7500. I've put $25K into her over the last 5 years, but we won't mention that...

I'm looking at SALTS - they may take her.

I just gave away my Cal 27 to a young man who has begun to restore the boat. I was very fortunate to find him through my local towboatsUS. I was really happy to find a good home. Giving away a boat is like giving away your dog to a good home rather than putting it down or chainsawing it. Very emotional but really satisfying finging a good and grateful home. The young man was just thrilled to get the boat.

We found this old girl drifting in the bayou.. She had been stripped of anything valuable, the registration numbers ground off and her name removed.. then set adrift.. Sad to see a fine old Morgan 38 out to pasture..

We did the SALTS route - they ended up giving us the tax receipt for what the surveyor determined a "fair market value" - it was heartbreaking to see our valued old boat go that route (Windward 28) that we had spent many wonderful hours on, but she was past the point that noone else was going to spend $$ on, when there is so much to chose from - we tried to selll her for 2yrs, expecting a bare minimum $ , but as you said, every year ended up costing us in moorage to the point where we were just digging a deeper hole.
Another option instead of SALTS, is the Disabled Sailing Association - they do the same sort of program, and in retropsect if I had known about them, I probably would have gone that route (I personnaly feel it is a more worth cause)

Interesting question. . .can you build reefs out of them? Strip everything of value off of them and fill em with concrete scrap so they don't drift away. . .and scuttle them? I mean, just sitting in the water nature WANTS to turn it into a reef. . .just a thought. . .

to make a reef of your boat, governmental permission is needed --permits for toxic waste, fuel; everything has to be gone from boat that could leak anything...tanks removed --everything must be gone from inside boat then it may have permission for scuttling.

I feel your pain. My boat is from 1967 and likely only someone wanting a Tartan 27' would consider taking it off my hands even though she is in good shape.
I hate to say this but I think that your asking price of $7500 is too high, no matter how much money you poured into her. It is weird that a boat with a newish diesel engine may not be worth as much as the diesel engine alone but that is how the world seems to work.
Another facet to all of this may be the brand name recognition and following it may have. I have not heard of the Crown brand before (not that that means much) and it may have a following or not. I looked up the Crown 28' on sailboatdata.com: http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=3790
and note that the designer is Lapworth and that a 'related boat' is the Cal 2-27, perhaps even made from the same molds. Part of what helps sell a boat is it's pedigree, as it were.

You may need to do a little calculus on this. Is it more financially sound to:
A) donate the boat to a charity for a tax write off of unknown value, as already suggested, OR
B) part out the boat, engine, hardware etc. and pay for disposal, OR
C) accept an offer for it near the $4000 it WILL cost you to keep it, OR
D) sell it for even less, perhaps even giving it away just so you don't have to spend another $4K?

Since you now own two (2) boats I think you need to think about stopping the bleeding of cash that it costs for both of them.
This is how we got our 1967 Tartan 27' from the PO for $4K about 10 years ago. He had already purchased a new to him Irwin 32' and needed to get out from under the storage payments for his old beloved T27 and concentrate on his 'new' Irwin. He also had it listed for an asking price of $7.5K but we bargained him down to $4K. When it comes time for me to sell our beloved T27 I'll be happy if we can get close to the same amount even though we have spent countless dollars on new sails, furler, engine parts etc, etc.

I feel your pain, druid ...

I've put lots of money into our boat and also plan to put a new 2 cylinder diesel in it this winter to replace the 1-cylinder chitti chitti bang bang. I don't expect any value added, but I do expect to enjoy the boat for many more years. I think the best I can hope for is a son or daughter who eventually wants her ... or somebody else who will appreciate her.
