I've read that containers that have fallen overboard but are bouyand enough that they don't sink are a real danger to cruising sailboats. A collision with the corner of a submerged container can tear open a hull to a degree that the boat sinks in just a few minutes. The newest containers are supposed to have a soluble plug that will scuttle the container after 14 days in the water.
