Foul Weather

Why do they say Foul Weather Gear when you could say Rain Gear much easier?

Not Necessarily Raining

Foul Weather Gear is just that... I normally wear my gear to block spray and wind. I have only used it in rain a few times.

Snowboarding Outfits

Last spring I bought snowboarding outfits (coat and pants)for my 15 and 17 year old sons to wear at Marshalls or TJ Maxx. Great stuff, GORTEX shell, light layer of insulation (snowboarders are too cool to wear heavy coats) and they even came in yellow with some reflecting tape. Total per kid under $75. RRegge Not only that but they wear them snowboarding.

Outlet Stores

I've had good luck getting GoreTex jackets & pants at the LL Bean & Eddie Baur Outlet Stores. Watch for end-of-season sales of discontinued items, etc. They don't have all the fancy reflective stuff, but you can add that yourself if you want it. I wear an inflatable PFD which has it anyway. Also, stores like EMS, Great Eastern, etc. sell GoreTex reconditioning stuff you can throw into a washing machine when cleaning these outfits. --Ron

How Foul is your Weather?

If you are expecting to sail in storms, rough water, cold nights, or in the off season, I'd buy as high quality gear that you can afford. This gear is going to last a long time (I have twenty year old 3rd Reef from West Marine), so don't cheap out now, you may wind up buying something more appropriate in a few years. Foul weather gear is constructed differently than rain gear with more room where you need it, reinforcements, etc. Remember, as owner/skipper, you'll be the only one cold, wet, and miserable on deck, while the rest of your crew is safely in the cabin. And while I'm spending your money, may I recommend something breathable like Gore-tex? Sweating under your foulies makes you cold, wet and clammy later on. Does your local West Marine have a "back room" where they sell off all of last years models? (Or better yet, an end of season parking lot sale?)

Lightweight Foulies

West Marine has Lightweight Foul Weather gear for $150. This is for the jacket and the bibs. Not too bad for weekend sailing.
