The hatch boards on my 23 are rotten and need replacement. I think they're some kind of teak plywood. Does anyone know where you can buy this wood? I doubt I can find replacement hatches, but I'd be happy to just get my hands on wood boards that I can cut myself. -Jed

They make replacements. Just give them the boat model and year. The price is pretty reasonable too. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

combination

Jed: You may also want to consider a combination of wood and plexiglass. If you use solid teak or mahogany you will find that the boards will last forever (if you take care of them). You can either purchase the wood from H&L Marine or they will actually make them up for you. They do excellent work and their prices are reasonable. H & L Marine Woodwork, Inc. 2965 E. Hatch boards

A few years ago I ordered a set from Hunter, , they are priced right even compared to buying the material and making your own, the first set I was sent were too tall, I sent them back and the next set was also too tall, I got out a saw and made them fit, Mike

plexi

Mine were made of walnut when I bought the boat. They looked nice but are now beginning to warp and make a tight fit. I'm having a pair of smoked plexiglas "boards" made which will match the sliding hatch cover. Of course, the guy at the fiberglass shop says I'll love them. They won't warp and they'll let more light in. I'll report back when I get 'em.

For the pair, last summer. I believe they called 'em pinboards, teak laminate. Mac

Mike: Mix and Match!

Mike: I like your idea of plexiglass (or lexan) main hatch boards. If cut the same dimensions as the teak boards, one has the option of having a teak bottom with a lexan top, or vice versa, to let in more light. My current top main hatch is smoked lexan. I have a single 3/4 inch plywood hatch that is used when not sailing but in my climate, I need to add 5 coats of spar varnish to the exterior of this hatch every 6 months and this is getting tiresome. I like your idea for storing and sailing! Cheers! Kevin.

Teak source

Most of the teak used on all boats in the US comes from a mill called East Teak Trading co in Donalds, SC. They have a toll free number. I'm sure you can get it thru toll free information. Whether or not they have plywood faced with teak or not, I don't know. I made a sales call on them a couple of years back and it was very interesting to watch teak get milled.

got plexi

I picked up my smoked plexiglas (lexan) hatch "boards" today. Very cool. It's a 2 piece configuration. Grooved between the bottom and top piece. Fit's perfect. Matches the sliding hatch now and will let more light in the cabin. No more oiling. Cost was $200.

hatch boards

West Marine has a polyethylene product called Star Board that can be used for the cabin hatch. According to the flyer I just received, they are 30% off from May 5 - 15. I ordered a piece to replace my hatch boards. No more maintenance and, I hope, they have a high recycled material content.
