Hello,

Brand new to the site, looks like quite a bit of information. I am also new to sailing and have recently purchased a Tempest, which is undergoing a minor restoration before she see's the lake in the spring. Still trying to find the exact year, and i have yet to find a hull ID. Looking forward to chatting with other owners.

Fantastic boat! IMHO, one of the very best Oday's ever. Just a beautiful, traditional design that looks like it should have a full keel, but with a fin keel and separate rudder. Enormous cockpit that is perfect for daysailing. If you found one in good shape (or even restorable), congratulations. Please share some pictures when you are ready.

Thanx.

She is a full keel, not the "international" tempest. this is her being delivered and a shot of part of the deck after re-paint.

hey! I just bought a tempest also. I have a different hatchway entry, and it looks like yours had had better attention paid to the bottom (Lucky You!). I am in the process of doing some patch/repair work just to get her sailing in the spring. I am not planing to spend big bucks, cause it is an older model (1965), and I want to use her for my main purpose: To become a better sailor and to learn how to take care of a ship that is bare bones first.

As far a sthe hull id, most boats here in the states weren't required to have a hull ID before a certain year. The tempests (from what I've read...) were built before this requirement went into effect. I have a plate in the cockpit by the tiller thats says the hull number and the class number.

The HIN was required starting in 1972 (actually, 01NOV 1972, for the 1973 model year.) Earlier O'DAYs had a plate like upie1 shows that listed a Hull# and a Class#, hull# refered to total O'Day production, Class# to that particular model, my old Widgeon was H# 22698 C# 1791, that indicated that she was the 22698th O'DAY built and the 1791st Widgeon. These vintage O'Days are hard to determine exact build year, although it is usually not hard to estimate (+/-).

The early TEMPESTS had an open aft end to the cabin (as did the Mariners) some time around 1967-8 an aft bulkhead was added to enclose the cabin and a sliding hatch was added. (The MARINER was updated in 1969).

Congrats on getting a Tempest! She a great boat, this past summer my wife and I were returning to our homeport in Mattapoisett from Martha's Vineyard and a squall blowing 25 to 30 knots, 7 to 10 foot waves come out of nowhere, our Tempest handle great, I couldn't believe we were doing 9 knots downwind!

This boat can handle anything, mine is a 1969, here a picture from our trip

jfrancis100, quick question? What are using for bottom paint? What about the deck and cockpit? I'm going to have to scrape my hull down in the spring. She will be sailing in brackish water in the Hudson river. I am looking for suggestions cause I am fairly new to this.
Thanks,
Charlie

Hi Charlie,

I use Interlux Micron Extra, I've had very good luck with it. The amount of growth was way down, from what I had experienced before with a cheaper brand.

Before you run out and an buy it, I would ask around other sailors where you sail to ask what they use, that what I did, local knowledge is always best.

Good Luck,

Joe

I have a friend who has one for sale/sail on Cave Run Lake, Morehead, KY. I love this boat's classic lines and it's pinkish hull color.

This picture was taken in January, 2010, when the boat was frozen into it's slip on the lake. I hope we don't have a lake freeze again this year.

Joe,
Thanks for the info. Your Tempest is beautiful! The paint is available here at hte Marinas, so I'll ask around and see what a couple of people say. What are you using on your topsides? That is a rich color. Being fairly new to sailing, I am going to concentrate on getting her in the water. If she is as in good condition as I think she is, then I may put some more time into restoring the rest of the boat. Fingers crossed, cause I like the way the boat "feels".

Sorry for hijacking the thread people, but yes "Where are all the tempests?" Steve found one in Kentucky. Any others out there?
Regards,
Charlie

Hi,

I used Brightside Polyurethane Paint, Flag Blue for the sides of the hull.

The trick is really in the cleaning and waxing. I use COLLINITE, Fiberglass Boat Cleaner and Heavy-Duty Fleetwax.

The best investment I've made was in a heavy duty random-orbital and dual action polisher, makes to job manageable. Even though our sailboats are only 23 feet, there is a lot of hull.
