Im a new Hunter 380 owner, and Im having a dickens of a time figuring out when to de-winterize my boat, and fully commission all systems for use. Anyone have any guidelines to use? I was thinking of waiting until I had a full week of 50+ degree temps, but I hear weather can really smack you if you dont time it right. It seems as though some of my slip mates have already gotten things rolling, but Im really paranoid about the Yanmar. Gerry

Tomato Planting Time

Problems happen to all plumbing (water, engine, A/C, generator) if water is in the hoses and it freezes. When your region typically has its last freeze, you should be safe to go. This is usually tomato planting time in the NE.

In New England...

...we start around April 1. I usually start with washing & waxing the hull. Then on to bottom touch-up, wash & wax the deck, put the bateries on, etc, etc. Do the non-winterized tasks first and move to the others as the weather warms up. The water and engine starting can wait until the boat's in the water. It's a gut feeling to know when you're not going to get that "hard" freeze any more.

Not a big deal

The spring weather on Cape Cod allows me to put my boat in around April 1 every year, and I've never had a problem with anything freezing. It' takes more than 1 trip below freezing to cause damage, and you can always throw a heater aboard at night if it makes you sleep easier and home not worrying. I usually put the boat in and let it sit for a couple of days, then step the mast, then run lines, and reconnect radar etc... By the time I get aorund to the fresh water it's not longer a problem with night temps below freezing. The nice part about being early is when the weather is finally nie for sailing you are out there while everyone else varnishes :) Got the first coat of wax on the hull yesterday, sunny and 65deg, gotta love it. See you out there! Bob Knott H380 S/V Serenity

Don't worry about the Yanmar..

Salt water doesn't freeze until it's below 30 degrees. The water temp in Long Island Sound is in the high 40"s, probably warmer were you are. I fired up the engine and generator this past Saturday and plan to commission the fresh water this week. Our days of real cold weather are over! (thank God!) We are planning our first overnight this weekend 4/1/00. MPJ
