I assume that my recently purchased 1986 C-30 has the original seacocks. They look like cheap inexpensive plastic ones. I am curious to know if others have changed them or when one knows that it is time to change them. They seem so flimsy that I was nervous everytime I opened or shut one. Thanks, Mike

Plastic or Marelon?

Mike Good question. Ours is an '86 C34. The seacocks are Marelon made in Australia at the time, I believe. They're black ball valves. There had been some problems with them, and Catalina had issued, NOT a recall, but an advisory. Do a Google search on "Marelon" as well as on this board's forum archives, and you'll learn all about them. I have only had ONE problem in the almost seven years we've had our boat: the head out 1 1/2 inch valve started leaking. So, I replaced it. All the rest: seawater intake, head intake/head sink out, shower out, galley out, all work just fine. Lubricate them and make sure you close them when you're off the boat, which keeps USING ALL OF THEM the most important factor. Don't let them sit in one position, especially open. Just good maintenance. the more you use 'em the better they work. Stu

Plastic or Marelon?

Go with brass...there more expensive...but last

bronze or plastic, not brass

I think bronze or plastic is preferable not brass- especially not in the marine environment. Brass won't last.
