When the Invertor/charger goes crazy

This week my Heart 1000 invertor went crazy and boiled two-one year old deep cycle batteries. Expensive disaster to say the least. At least I caught it before the boat caught fire. Question is this, is there a way to detect and set off an alarm when a charger ramps up and boils the batteries. Don't say turn the charger off as that isn't an option. When you have d.c. refriguration, the charger stays on. The unit was installed in 1996 and has been on ever since.

Don't think so, but...

If you had a bad cell, it may have kept pumping in amps, I guess. Just happened on a classic car I have. However, it might be wise to have a tech check it. Good luck Rick D.

Overcharge Protection

Fuses in the charger (+) output(s) will protect against a shorted cell, which would cause a very high amperage draw. If your problem is too high output voltage (boils battery dry over time) ... Gord

Repair?

Just heard from the local Heart repair location. The cost to repair is $575 because both A/C and D/C boards are bad. Anybody need a boat anchor? I am thinking about going back to a regular DC charger and forgeting about the Christmas Parade and other A/C usess while sailing.

Wait Jim:

I had a board REPAIRED for about a hundred bucks. Saying they both need to be replaced may be premature. Check with someone else first if that is an option. Otherwise, I understand your pain.... Rick D.
