PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - A steering problem caused a new cruise ship to roll abruptly Tuesday, throwing passengers and crew to the deck and injuring dozens, including two critically, officials said. One passenger said immediately before the ship turned violently he heard "Ready, About!" The captain of the ship, the owner of a small cruising sailboat, was not available for comment. ==== Wish I could take credit for that second paragraph.

I would have liked to be a fly in the wall...

in that cockpit. These ships are steered by electronics with redundant systems and trouble warning lamps and buzzers. Someone was not properly trained, not paying attention or disregarded warning signs. You'd think if the boat was listin all day the capatin would have noticed. Or did he think it was just heeling from windage?

Will Be Interesting To See The Follow Up

... if you happen to see it, post a link. i have to assume this has power pods for both thrust and steerage as most of the newer liners do. Some of those are independent and I would speculate one might have gone bonkers. Still, as was mentioned, the bridge would have been full of alarms. So, maybe it was a Windows-based sustem and it crashed? 38 degrees would get your attention! Will be interesting to see that trued up... I'm betting OE. RD

These hi-rise boats look awful tender

The reports say the turn was to starboard. I would like to know which way she listed. If she listed to port it would indicate a stability problem as very tender vessels tend to lean in the direction they were going in a fast turn.

Why on earth...

would you show a movie about one of the worst maritime disasters on a cruise ship? "Several passengers said Tuesday night's shipboard movie was supposed to be "Titanic." followed by the "Poseidon Adventure" - a real bluewater thriller double header.
