When dropping the mast on the O'Day25 forward...

When dropping the mast on the O'Day25 forward following the instructions posted recently, how much do you loosen the shrouds? The angles to consider are the lift associated with the mast foot rising as it pivots on the front pin. In the past I loosened quite a bit and am now wondering after reading the posting knowing there is an educated group here if I am over doing it. It would be nicve to raise and lower and not have to mess with the shrouds, but could it really be that easy? TIA, Tor

Quite a bit...

I just lowered my mast for the first time and like you I was trying to minimize loosening the shrouds. However, I found out the hard way that you have to loosen them until they are totally slack and flop around a little. I initially just loosened them a little to relieve the step pressure, and when the mast started pivoting the guy holding the mast yelled "Stop ! They're getting real tight !" So I pulled the mast back and loosened them almost all the way, and I noticed I bent the lower shroud T-bolts. I hope I didn't damage anything else. So I need new ones. That's my experience, but it's my first time. Others may have more experience and ideas.

Don't loosen them at all

I have lowered the mast on my 25 a few times, and have never loosened the shrouds. The inner shrouds get looser as you lower. Do you have the triangle plates on the outer shrouds? Thats where you connect a line to the outer end of the boom to keep everything on line as you lower. The triangle plates are on the same plane as the mast hinge, so the geometry shouldn't change when lowering. If the shrouds are loosened, you can't keep the mast from flopping to one side or the other.

If you DON'T have the triangle plates...

you will need to loosen them as they terminate below the mast step and will tighten as the mast swings forward.
