I am moving my boat out of the water during the first week of October, curious does anyone keep sailing well into November in the NE?

Longer than your's

I dock at Pymatuning Lake on the Northwest border of Pennsylvania & Ohio. Last year they extended the season until November 15. I pulled my boat last year on Nov. 2nd, and I was about the last boat remaining. The state Fish Commission had pulled most of the bouys already surrounding the marina. The year before, when I pulled the boat out in October, there was sleet falling as I broke the boat down for trailering.

I normally winterize early November and pull mid-November. Columbus Day weekend is usually our last overnight.

Season ends when the water's gone ~ Nov

Candlewood Lake is a manmade lake, and the water gets drawn down in mid-November. The docks at my marina get lifted anywhere from mid-Oct to draw-down date. Last year I was still sailing first week of Nov. This season we got an MPV to pull the boat with so perhaps a trip down to the Sound after that. However, I do want to have a few days of not too frigid weather to work on the improvements I plan on making, so once it's out, I think that's it. (Since mine is a small daysailor, that's about the limit!) And please - no snide comments from the rude left-coasters, like the last winter-related question! We love it here!

my boat comes out mid-october. I crew on a race boat throught the end of october. I will be racing small centerboarders for a frostbite series thru November. I'll take a vacation in December/January to somewhere warm for a week (and sail) I'll take Feb off from sailing and go skiing. March is time to get the boat ready to do it all over

First week in Nov

I try to sail into November. I have made it the last two years. After a week or two, it gets too cold and too dark. Barry

Until the bay start to freeze over .....

Im on the northern Chesapeake. I watch the water temp from the CO-OPs buoys and usually escape to the hard about a week before the water becomes hard .... about Christmas time last two years. Most folks get pulled after the first of Nov. I usually have the bay totally to myself. There are always warm and brilliant days at that time of year.

October is beautiful

October 21st is the last day that my marina takes boats out. Mine will be the last boat out on that day. The next few weeks will be spectaculer with the fall colors!

Truly Dedicated Sailors

I envy you guys in the NE during the summer when it's hot, too hot to be without A/C, the wind is unreliable, the water is ugly brown, there are no scenic gunk holes to explore, no crisp morning fog. I know these thing as I lived in Albany, NY as a kid and we travelled through NE regularly. But now it's time to go sailing here in the Lone Star state and we'll be sailing through the winter months(I can't call it winter because it's not). The temperature has dropped below 90, the winds are changing and the In-The-Water Boat show(great fun) is this weekend so we're off to the boat! I can't imagine putting my boat on the hard for 4 months but then I'm sure you guys can't imagine why anyone would want to have a boat where you risk total destruction from hurricanes. The fact is no matter where we are the common thread is sailing and we all do what we have to do and enjoy the time we have on our boats. It is being on my boat that gives me peace of mind, something golf will never do. Tom s/v At Last

Funny

Some are showing their pride of their area and others are hiding their pride in hopes we deter others in comming to our area...being selfish and not wanting to share :) I don't think there is any place that is better then another now days. Sure, some places have some great advantages but now days are offset with the high prices because of the high demand (aka....$18 per foot slip fee in Miami).

Hey Joanie

Nice photo. Great advantage of a trailer sailor is that you can sail anytime you want. At least you can in portland harbor where water doesn't freeze. I bet it's tough to get Jeff out there though! You want to go sailing with us tomorrow? We will be hauling Oct. 22 this year. Frostbite racing starts in Dec. Tim R.

Oct 6th

seems just about right for this year, the temp will be around 75 and maybe some rain. A lot better than 35 and sleeting rain, we'll be putting the new tarp on this year, probably paint the bottom and be ready for next spring. we've been lucky with the weather this summer and i just don't want to push it much longer. Winters a coming -15 and 3' of snow, ya gotta love the winter.

Southern Sailing Never Ends

When I was growing up in Chicago and racing a Rhodes 19 out of Belmont Harbor, I remember the fall races and the skippers wanting to sail as long as possible before those snows and cold winds took over. It was a bummer to give up the water! Even now when we go up to Providence, RI during the winter to visit my wife's family, I see yards of covered boats and empty marinas. For a year round sailor it's almost unnatural!!Its got to be tough everyone to shrink wrap and pack away your passion, but that is the balance for living in such a beautiful part of the country. Fortunately, here in the south (Atlanta) we get to sail throughout the winter and fall and winter provide's our best sailing conditions. The powerboats are tucked away in garages or left idle at the many marinas and the lake is all ours! Rarely do we get snow or sleet and never has Lanier or the major lakes froze on the edges. Races run all year long with most of the clubs. Average temps run in the 50's and the winds from the northwest dominant for the season. We are fortunate indeed, so enjoy the New England fall season and if you ever travel southward (I-75 or I-85) stop at Lake Lanier where sailors are always a friendly group and always have room for our New England sailing neighbors so we can proudly show off our beautiful and pristine sailing grounds. Regards Bob Catalina 30 "Breezin II"

Too soon, this year!

We've had a dry year and I've been watching the lake level drop all summer. I was told yesterday that I better get my boat over to the marina this weekend so they can pull it out next week. The water at the lift is getting too low to wait any longer. That's too bad because I was looking forward to about four more weekends. This one will probably be the last. :(
