Same here in South Louisiana.. Great sailing right now.. Gets a bit chilly sometimes but usually does not stay that way for long. This is one morning at about 32F on December 2..almost cold enough for me to put on gloves.. By noon, we are usually back to short pants..

We have to be off the lake at the latest the last weekend in October. Being in Minnesota I am sure that makes sense to you all. We had 12 inches of snow in the norther part yesterday and a freeze over night down here in "The Cities". This weekend might be the last one to go out with maybe a couple days next week. I am planning on pulling Papillon the week of the 15th......

In this area you don't have to stop for winter maybe don't sail as much but there are beautifull sailing days all through the winter you just have to watch for them and be ready to go.

Back in 1991, Minnesota enjoyed part of the "Halloween" snowstorm. Same storm that was part of the Perfect Storm, Andrea Gail, etc..

The day before was beautiful, sunny, calm, almost 70 degrees. My dad and I were out taking in the fall colors that day, even went for a drive around Minnetonka. It was a pretty day. 24 hours later it was a different story.

By dusk, Halloween night, we had a foot of snow on the ground and the wind was starting to howl. On the Ten O'clock news they were showing guys at the boat ramps on Minnetonka shoveling 2 feet of snow out of their boats and rushing to get their boats off of the lake. Many didnt make it, and to this day there are still 100's of boats on the bottom of that lake, and many more on the bottoms of other lakes. When it was all over, we racked up 29 inches officially, at the airport (MSP), more or less in other places. Having lived there all my life and having faced many big blizzards, it was simply unbelievable.

People used to wait till mid November to pull their boats out up there, but that storm put a big scare in everyone. By the following morning the lakes were froze over solid. By Nov 3rd the temp was almost zero and the wind was screaming. To add insult to injury, on the 4th we got another 14 inches of snow. Longest winter I can remember, the lakes didnt ice out till late April/early May.

I guess what im saying is if you live in a northern climate with iced over lakes during winter, dont get caught with your pants down. This season looks to be starting early and has all the impressions of possibly being harsh. Thankfully, I dont live "there" anymore, and dont need to pull the boat out. It hasnt been out of the water since at least 2007, and more likely not since 2002.

Just to add some fun....

Some of the Twin Cities records that were broken by the 1991 Halloween Blizzard were:

Event 1991 Old Record (1891-1990)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Most single storm snow total 28.4 -- 20.0 (Jan 22-23 1982)
24 hour snowfall in any season 21.0 -- 18.5 (January 23, 1982)
Most snow on October 31 8.2 -- .4 (1954)
Most snow on November 1 18.5 -- 3.6 (1941)
Most snow in October 8.2 -- 5.5 (1905)
Earliest 8 inch snow 8.2 -- 8.5 (Nov 8, 1943)
Earliest autumn below zero low -3* -- -1 (Nov 11, 1986)

All of these records still stand as of 2012.

Anchor ... if you looked at my photo, you should notice the inconguity of fall leaves and snow. That was our October snow last year. We had up to 18" on October 29 in our area of northern NJ and the photo was taken the next day. I did have to shovel the snow off the boat, but there wasn't enough weight from the snow to cause any problems. I think that down by the water, the accumulation was far less because of the warmth from the water. That was virtually the only snow fall for the season. We had one small storm that required the snowblower in early Feb or thereabouts. Otherwise it was very warm and dry all winter. The lake didn't freeze and if the boat were in the water, I could have sailed!

Some here have talked about two feet of heavy wet snow back some years ago. The boat houses are all floating platforms and almost all the privates and all the marinas have full roofs except for the sailboat slips. I hear it was real mess because many of the houses went under and took a lot of the boats down with them.

Scott, thats really a cool picture. There have been a few snowfalls here that looked similar, maybe for once in my life I can take the boat out on a day like that and enjoy it. It would be pretty foolish not to have your boat out of the water before Halloween up in Minnesota. The lake here seldom drops much below 50 degrees, so on warmer days in January it should be quite nice.

Anchorclanker - I remember that snowstorm on Halloween as I was out shovelling all of that snow, multiple times, off the driveway and sidewalk. I also dropped a roomate off at the airport that morning as he and his coworkers flew off to Vegas. My wife(ex) and I dealt with the snow...... I should be good for this October as there isn't any snow forecasted this far "south" yet.

We had a small farm just north of the twin cities. With drifts I dont know exactly how much snow we got, but it took me all day long the next day to clear the driveway, hitting heavy wet snow up to neck level in places. I had snow piled up 15 feet high all around the house, 10 feet high either side of the driveway. There was still snow on the ground May 1st, and then it was mud for a month. I think it was that spring (1992), we had snow flurries on Memorial Day. Dad always said 9 months of winter and 3 months of tough sledding. I dont miss it at all.

As far as I'm concerned the Corps can pump themselves down the river. What a bureaucratic nightmare, especially here in Georgia.
