How often should the shaft seal be replaced? I noticed last season that it was dripping slightly more than the recommended 10-14 drips per minute.

Packing gland?

I'm assuming you're talking about your packing gland on your engine. They're usually good for quite a long time (say, 10 years or more). Sounds like yours just needs to be tightened. If you check through our archives you'll find several discussions about how to do it yourself. LaDonna

Packing Gland

I repack mine every year. It takes only about 30 minutes. I use teflon impregnated packing and I barely have a drip. Water sweats out when the shaft is turning. As long as the shaft log does not get warm, you can limit the amount of water that drips out to almost nothing. Repacking each year keeps the packing lubricated and flexible. If you want to content with drips you can leave it in for more then a year.
