Being my first post I would like to introduce myself as I might be spending alot of time of these forums.

My name is Zacharias Reis, Im 23 years old.

I have lived in the Florida Keys for the better part of my life and have never been a water person until recently I had the oppertunity to go sailing for the first time in 12 years with my father, my girlfriend and her family. My girlfriend and I enjoyed that day so much that we decided to buy our own sailboat. When I was younger I hated it because it was slow, and boring. I finally figured out that its not how fast you get there...its actually getting there thats the real beauty behind life.

I am a first time sailboat buyer and I have found a boat that fits my budget and my needs, just so happens its a Catalina 27, so here I am.

I am wondering if there are any model specific problems that come along with this boat, or any tell tale signs to stay away from a purchase?

Just basicly what would an experienced sailboat buyer look for and look at before committing to the purchase.....we all hate spending the first few hours with a newly aquired toy and finding out that it has more issues than first realized.

As far as this specific boat is concerened, the owner used it as a liveaboard for 6 years. She stated that she has not been out on the boat for 6 months and it is anchored in a bay.

Thank you in advance for your time.

And as always, but I forgot to add:

get a surveyor. Best $300 you'll spend. Which is noted in that referenced link.

The Catalina 27 is one of the most popular production boats built, so any problems and repairs are very well-documented, and parts will be easy to find. Hiring a surveyor is very important to cover the biggest potential disasters. That said, I think you still might fairly expect to discover problems you didn't foresee, and expect your new boat to be a labor of love - whether it's 5 years or 35 years old.

Use a good surveyor that has the tools to check for moisture in the decks.
