I would like to add a wheel to steer the boat without paying a lot for the setup. Can a power boat steering system be modified to do this?

Should work

I don't see why it wouldn't work. Turning the wheel to the right on a powerboat pushes the cable into it's housing, turning the outboard/outdrive to the right. Turning left reverses this, turning the drive to the left. Obviously you would have to shorten the cables, fabricate a pedestal mount, and figure out your linkage to the rudder castle. I definately think it could be done. My only concern would be with the size of the wheel itself. I'm not sure if a powerboat wheel is big enough (diameter wize) to give enough leverage in a blow. I know there can be a fair amount of resistance on a 3 foot tiller. Your linkage to the rudder castle is likely to be a lot less than that. Without the extra leverage provided by the longer tiller, it may be tough to steer with the smaller wheel. That being said, it shouldn't be that big of a deal to mount a larger wheel or even fabricate one using the powerboat's wheel hub as a start. If anyone here can provide photos/drawings of a wheel conversion on a 25 that would be a great start. Keep us posted on how this goes. I would be interested in doing the same to my 25 at some point. I know of a few abandoned powerboats i could probably get parts from. -John
