WHEEL VS. TILLER

I am considering buying an '81 Tall rig w/ bow sprit. It has a wheel. I have always owned, raced and enjoyed tiller boats. I find that when racing, it is easier to see the jib luff streamers when using a tiller. I drove an older Yankee 28 with a wheel and found it almost impossible to see the jib luff. Any thoughts? Any remedies if I buy one with a wheel? I will be racing. Thanks, Dick Boren

Catalina 30?

You didn't say which model you have, I'm assuming it's a Catalina 30. Most have the wheel and many purists and/or racers question the wisdom of a wheel on a boat the size of the C-30. If you find you don't like the wheel, converting back to the tiller wouldn't be hard since the rudder post is still there. On my '81, the emergency tiller hardware is identical to that used in the tiller model. Later models (I'm not sure when the switch was made) have a different rudder post head fitting that would need to be changed out. All you would need to do is remove the wheel mechanism, patch the holes, add a standard length tiller and convert your engine controls to a suitable cockpit mounted control. If you were creative in how you did this, you could do it in a manner that was relatively easy to convert back to the wheel if you change your mind or want to sell the boat. The engine control conversion is probably the most complex part. I can steer my wheel and see the jib luff at the same time.

Racing with a Wheel

I have raced on a Cal 30 with a tiller, and this year we've been racing my C30 TR which has the wheel like yours. Although the tiller seems to be more natural and sensitive than the wheel, it kills a ton of room in the cockpit- especially during tacks. I sit on the lee combing and the wheel is within easy reach. There is no difficulty seeing the telltales from that position. Now, pointing is a whole different matter. If you can get her to point closer than 50 deg. off the wind, I'd be very interested.
