Is there a conversion to wheel steering for a cal 2-27 1978? (I looked back at another request and I listed my boat as a 87, sorry.)Wife has a hard time under power with the prop against the rudder, thought the wheel would take a little of the edge off. thanks john

Cal 2-27 wheel

I have a 1980 227 with a diesel engine, and your wife is right, steering under power is awful. After my first 5 hour trip I knew I had to do something. What I did was purchase an autohelm self steering unit. When the engine is running at about 80% or less of full speed the unit controls very well. At higher rpm it does long slow s-curves. It is a great thing to have for those long drives. About the wheel, some 227's have a wheel it might even have been a factory option. Go to sailnet.com and sign up for the e-mail forum someone there will have an answer for your questions. It's a great site for any Cal related problem you will receive MANY E-mails every day.

Hello, My 2-27 was fitted with an Edson pull-pull wheel steering system by a previous owner. Nothing appears complex with its installation, but I'm guessing that it was a time consuming project. Regards, Michael

WHEEL

Michael Is your rudder post close to the stern? I have about 4 inches between the C/L of the post and my stern. Just wondering how to fit the petestal for the wheel. Thanks again John

Pedestal 2-27

The pedestal does not fit overtop the rudder post, its connected indirectly by turning-blocks and wires (or chain). Perhaps you could find a 2-27 with one to copy, or copy a boat with a similar rig, or ask Edson for help (saw a post about how helpful they are.)

Hello Everyone, I have been taking loads of digital photographs while doing work on my 2-27. If anyone would like to have pictures of the Edson pedestal, just let me know. Regards, Michael Duvall

John, The pedestal is positioned about two feet ahead of the rudder post. There is a cable system below the cockpit sole (using a pull-pull configuration) that connects with the rudder post. In the event of a failure, I still have the ability to connect an "emergency" tiller. Regards, Michael
