Wheel Retaining Ring

The retaining ring (Circlip, snap ring..etc) that my (Merriman) wheel backs up to on the shaft has broken. I know that it is a stainless, heavy duty (0.078” thick), external, retaining ring for a 1” shaft (size 98).. The problem is that I can’t find one/two to buy . I can find them in lots of 25 ($100).. but I really need only one and I’d buy another for a spare. Curious if anyone has a source of these at a reasonable price. I know that Edson has them as part of the “pedestal kit” but they are asking $37-45 for the kit ..
Anyone have a couple that they’d sell??

Claude, have you tried Sea Chest in New Orleans? Also Mayer Yachts in New Orleans is a Hunter dealer. He may have parts as well.

I have checked with Motion Industries and McMaster, and a bunch of guys.. All is good until ya mention Heavy Duty (0.78" thick) and stainless.. Then they all so far have said that they'd have to call back and when they did it was with a quantity of 25 or 100 or 1000.. haven't talked to the guys on the lakefront in New Orleans yet.. Haven't talked to Phil on the forum.. but it did seem like something that they might have since they probably could sell 25 ?? Didn't know if MaineSail had some available around the yard.??

Hey Claude. I don't have your answer but,

I've replaced that very retaining ring (I've long since forgotten why.)

To just get something on there I went to Home Depot and got a spring steel ring and popped it on intending to replace it with a proper stainless version ASAP.

That was several years ago.

It's gotten corroded (no surprise) but it's still there and working. I think it cost me 10 cents. For a few bucks I could replace it every couple months for a very long time.

When you think about it though, it's never going to be responsible for any big loads and it's only function (as far as I can tell) is to keep the wheel located away from the pedestal.

If you find a source for stainless be sure to let us know. In the meantime HD has a cheap temporary solution.

Or maybe not so temporary.

Hard to find

What you are looking for is hard to find, but a adequate alternative is a carbon steel Home depot version with a few coats of Rustoleum paint.

Another fix is to use a split PVC pipe section of the proper length as a spacer behind the wheel.

Actually, you wouldn't even need to split the PVC since you should be able to remove the wheel to slide it on.

In a pinch use 2 0.048" thick retaining rings and simply take one ring and carefully reduce its thickness to 0.030" on a silicon carbide 'sharpening stone' by hand or by grinding if you have the means. Just orient the rings at 180° ... until you find a proper 0.078" thick ring.

Thanks guys !! I know that there are options and I can jury rig with the best of shade-tree folks.. but I was looking for the actual part.. Right now, the two halves are stuck in place with Gorilla glue.. Because the load is axial, that is a fine solution.. even without the ring, the autopilot drive ring keeps it from moving forward more than 3/8" so the key stays engaged.. Not a real problem, I was trying to replace in kind and looking for a source of two and not 25.. The standard ring in stainlessis pretty easy to come by in 1 or 2 quantities and one by itself is OK since the wheel nut can tighten the hub against it and the load from the nut will not shear the ring.. Again, Thanks for the replies..

Just contact one of the mfg. Many of them do not list EVERYTHING that they make.

I find that they will send you engineering samples at no charge for many of these cheaper parts.
