Wheel Pilot Does a Reset

I have a RayMarine Wheel Pilot ST4000+ that will do a "Crazy Ivan" (reset) while under battery power. When running the engine, the unit works fine.

I have checked the connections and do have 12+ volts to the terminal where I have the power to the wiring of the Wheel Pilot. I did run wiring to the stern of the boat where I installed a 'block' that the Wheel Pilot is installed along with my chartplotter and radar. The volts to that block is where I got the 12+ volt reading.

I called RayMarine and all they told me is that is a power issue. Any thoughts as to how I can correct this problem?

When I installed ours, I recall that the instructions called for a discreet power supply line. I ran a line from its own breaker to the head unit. While we get Crazy Ivans, they have nothing to do with battery vs. alternator. I'm pretty sure ours is due to my procrastination in installing the rudder sensor I purchased.

Does a discreet power line not tell your wife who you had on board over the weekend when she went shopping instead of sailing?

I second the idea of supplying power to the pilot with a discreet line. The pilot motor pulls a big load when it first starts, which is pulling the voltage below a point that trips a reset. The higher voltage input of the alternator is enough to overcome the big load.

Assuming that the wiring is sized correctly, all connections are clean and tight, and the batteries or sufficient, your only other option is beef up the existing wiring size or to install a new wire just for the auto pilot.
