I took a 1996 Hunter 280 for a test sail Saturday and loved it. This will be my first boat with a wheel. I thought wheel's generally have a lock, but this one did not. So how do you keep the boat steady while raising the sail? (I'm usually alone). On my tiller boat I just rig up the tiller tamer. How would I handle it on this boat? Ideas? Thanks, Mary

Edson?

If this is an Edson, you can purchase a wheel brake kit from Edson. You might try HOW chandlrey as it was a special whell brake kit which required a long arm for the wheel brake versus the standard. The Edson steering unit within the fiberglass housing is a 340-2-11. If HOW cannot help you, then call Edson at 508-995-9711. Don't even think West Marine can help you on this one. Identify your boat as a Hunter 280 requiring the extra long arm.

Autopilot

My 280 had an autopilot installed when I bought it. It does a nice job of keeping the boat on course while raising the sails. It's a great boat for singlehanding.

S1 Wheel Pilot

I installed the S1 wheel Pilot (Raymarine) on my H31. It came with wheel lock and a rudder angle indicator (part of the system) lets me know how the rudder is pointing. This function is very useful for me because I used to steer by tiller before.
