I am contemplating replacing the tiller on out hunter 27'/1979 with a wheel. Anyone done this themselves? Is it terribly difficult. I am assuming that an edson wheel is the only way to go. Is this correct? Also, I was thinking of cutting out the rear cooler area in the stern to give me standing room. Any thoughts?

HI JOHN, IF IT WERE MY BOAT I WOULD...

install a tiller mounted autopilot. It would be less intrusive than converting to a wheel and more functional, especially when solo sailing. Terry

There are lots of threads on why and how to do this modification. The other Cherubini h27 in our marina has a wheel. Bryan steers from the side, not behind it most of the time. Most designs provide for this, and for sitting behind the wheel as alternatives. I prefer a tiller for the more responsive control, and ability to swing it up the clear the cockpit at anchor, or the dock. David Lady Lillie
