The wheel brake on my Edson pedestal is not holding the wheel snug any longer. The pads are either worn down or grease is on them and causing the slipping. I was in West Marine for some other items today so I asked about the brake maitenance kit in the catalog - $45. It was not in stock and I instructed them to order it for me. When I go to check out, I see that the wheel brake kit was charged at $54. I asked why...they said price increase (20% seems pretty high). They refused to match the 2006 catalog price, so I said no thanks. Before I order the kit directly from Edson (or another source), does anybody know of another material that can be used for the pads? Any other ideas?

Make sure the pads are centered or you will have to trim them a little to get the unit back together. Also, the two halves of the brake are brass (non-magnetic) so be carefull not to drop them inside the pedestal. Good luck.

thanks for the quick responses...David, I tried the price match thing today at West Marine ( I had the Defender catalog)...this WM store has done that before for me, but today they said they adopted a new policy recently and stopped the price match. I guess they don't understand lower margins might be better than no sale and no margins. I don't mind paying a little more for help, but 20% for a generic parts kit...come on. Steph, Some of the modern drills also function as
clutched screw drivers. As such they have limited use as impact wrenches. sometimes an impact wrench will loosen a bolt that won't yield the hand tools. Now if the are slotted screws then a carpenters bit brace with a screwdriver bit often provides enough power.

A lot cheaper: no tax. http://www.defender.com/productsearchresult.jsp BTW, I have used a very large, long screwdriver to remove my pedestal screws. But the long screws are also bent and distorted. I guess that WM is trying to kill themselves with the no-price-match policy. Defender has always been good for price-matching at WM.

PBlaster or Kroil: great pentrants for stuck bolts
I have no interest in the company, but PBlaster is really great stuff, available at many stores. Kroil is also incredible, but available only online direct from Kano(?) Labs. These products are not WD-40, they are serious pentrants. Spray 'em on, wait a bit, some back and do it again...I've seen heavily rusted nuts and bolts spin apart like a magic trick after a single shot of Kroil. It's on my short list of "stuff which MUST be kept on the shelf." Cheaper than an impact hammer, too.<G>

Red, a side question about Kroil vs PB Blaster....
It sounds like you have used both products. Do you have an opinion as to which one is better? Or have you learned that certain cases work better with each one? I would like to get some Kroil but the on-line ordering and S&H charges make the product 3x the price of PB Blaster that I can get at any number of local stores. Opinions?

Another Vote for PB Blaster
I had to do some work on an old grey in our 1915 launch. The manifold bolts were frozen. A couple of applications of PB blaster freed them up after soaking overnight. I was sure they would break, but they came off just fine. Great stuff. Also used it on a mast step. Same results. Rick D.
