I'd like to wrap a rope braid around the wheel on our recently acquired Hunter 31. Does anyone know of a good book on this subject?

Check out the HOW Photo Forum, "Ringbolt Hitch for Wheel." The contributor probably would "steer" you in the right direction.

If I recall correctly, a leather braiding for the wheel is described in Don Casey's "100 Fast and Easy Boat Improvements". Cheers, John

Marlinspike Sailor

I would suggest Ashley Book of Knots by Clifford Ashley. It is THE KNOT BOOK. Or Marlinspike Sailor by Hervey Garrett Smith which has specific applications for you. From the Fatbrain Advert on Marlinspike Sailor -- Hervey Garrett Smith's wonderful drawings of traditional ropework quickly propelled The Marlinspike Sailor to cult classic status when it was first published. With the addition of a section on modern, synthetic rope, its popularity has continued undiminished. It teaches a few basic knots and splices, but its real business is decorative rope and canvas work--the traditional arts of the sailor--and here it has no equal. For making a rope mat, a rope ladder, a sea chest, a ditty bag, a canvas bucket, a mast boot, and the best-looking rope fenders or heaving line in the marina, this is the book have.

Fancy Rope on Helm

Hi Dave, I'm the one who posted the picture on the photo forum of the helm. After digging through several books, I found out the correct name for what I did is "French Spiral Hitch". This is nothing but a continous series of half hitches which spiral around the wheel. After doing this I would change the start and finish points. Start at the amidships point and go half way around the wheel. Go back to the start point and finish off the other half. Think this will make a cleaner look. I'm still trying to ty a Turks Head knot to finish off the amidship point - its killing me. See URL www.northnet.org/ropeworks/archive/ringbolt.html this shows a great method for starting and finishing the work off. Whip hitching. Jim S/V Java jrseamans@speakeasy.org
