We are planning on installing the Raymarine ST4000 plus mk2. I would be interested in any installation tips from someone who has done the installation. Specifically, any issues with spacing behind the wheel and how to fasten.

Enough Power

Dick, I fitted the Autohelm 6000 with the chain drive. It all went into the steering console and there was room for a large sprocket on the fwd end of the wheel shaft. The installation has been well nigh perfect in operation but sometimes I wonder how it could cope with the loads. My concern with the belt type is that the belt might not be capable of holding the boat on course when broad reaching in strong winds. My drive motor is on the shelf inside the console and occasionally I have had it deflect enough to cause the chain to jump on the small sprocket. Since then I have fitted stiffeners between shelf and steering shelf. I cannot visualise the smaller pilot having enough rigidity in its mounting bracket for use at times when you really need it. Kind regards, Don

Enough power for the job

I have an Autohelm 4000( same unit as Raytheon except the Raytheon has a nicer display) on my H37C 18,300lbs displacement and it handles the boat well running and reaching in 35 knots of wind. Installation is pretty straightforward. Just follow the directions included. The flux gate compass positioning is not as critical as it is made out to be.

Autopilot

The ST4000 was great on my 336. On my 376 I have an ST7000. On the West coast the ST4000 on a 376 would be a fair weather pilot. I would say that if you keep the boat in excellent trim at all times the 4000 will be ok. If you are a little late on the sail adjustment or slightly lazy like me a 6000 or 7000 is what is required for best results.
