I have a 1995 Hunter 336 I am looking to add a wheel driven autopilot. In speaking with the raymarine dealer there is a challenge in that the wheel is attached to the fiberglass table console and does not provide enough room for the drive arm. Has anyone encountered this and come up with a workable solution other than cutting a hole in the fiberglass? Thanks in advance. Matt

Possible solutions

Hi Matt. I spoke to both Hunter and Raymarine regarding your situation. First of all, it is clear that we would have to cut a hole in the fiberglass console for the S1 wheel pilot. The only way around modifying the console is to go with a below decks autopilot at a significantly higher cost. The bigger challenge is fitting a rudder reference transducer in that steering system that is sandwiched on all sides. There is very little room to work with. I'm sure we could come up with some kind of solution by modifying something, but the labor will start to get quite high. I did hear from Raymarine that they are working on new software for the S1 wheel pilot that will allow it to be installed without a rudder reference transducer. They said it would be about a month or so before that is ready. I guess I will call you some time soon to discuss your options. Thanks, Ryan Marine Technical Services

Rotary Drive

Interesting installation of the rotary drive. My question would be does your boat have a rudder reference transducer installed somewhere. If so, where? I imagine you probably have a ST4000+ mark II control head that was able to be installed without one.
