Oil Change Device

As you can see, everyone has their favorite device for changing oil. Which one is the "best?" Depends on how you think about it. I use a high quality brass hand pump that I find perfectly adequate to change oil, and many other tasks around my boat. While there are probably "better" devices for sucking out the old oil from engine and transmission, many are more expensive and most are single purpose devices. My hand pump is also useful for sucking water out of tight spaces between the hull and liner, sucking water out of the bilge, moving fluids from one containter to another, and myriad other chores. And, it doesn't take up a lot of space. Whatever device you choose, do change your oil and filter frequently.

Gravity

Alan,
I hope that you have a way of collecting the oil that emerges after you pull your drain plug.
A boat yard guy I met in MD told me he thought that all sailboat (Blow-boaters) owners drained their engine oil into the bilge.
I sure hope that you are not doing that on the LI Sound.
Gravity does work everywhere.

Gravity.

Fortunately I don't need to have a pump. I just pull the drain plug and let gravity do the rest. No mess no fuss and no hoping I got it all out cause gravity works everywhere.

Tempo Oil Boy , West Marine sells a no-name that looks identical-I went thru 3 or 4 of the "thru the dipstick hole" type of pumps that slopped oil all over the deck before I discovered that the local marina was using the Tempo . I found it also lets me drain/winterize plumbing drains without undoing traps etc. I left one on the boat and bought another for the cottages.
