Water Ballast 26

Bob, actually there were two versions of the water ballast Mac 26. The original, which I owned (see my previous posts) had a daggerboard which could be raised or lowered while underway. Later models used a swing centerboard. I guess the swing board was less likely to cause damage to the boat when it ran aground.

Macgregor

My first boat was a Venture(Macgregor) 25 which I owned for about 6 years. It was my first sailboat and I bought it because it was cheap and like many first time sailors, I didn't know if sailing was going to be something I would love or hate. These boats were designed as a low maintenance, trailerable sailboats that were affordable to people of more modest means. Like the Ford Model T was to the automobile market, the lower frills Macgregor made sailing accessable to more people. As for people who knock Macgregor sailboats as a "poor man's boat", I say "SCREW YOU"! Macgregor/Venture owners know their boat is not a Swan or other high end boat, but that doesn't mean they don't enjoy a nice breeze on the water any less.

I can tell you this

Look through our classifieds and you'll see a lot of old Macs still sailing. They've got a huge and loyal group of owners. If the boat fits your needs, what else do you need to know?

The deck is like a trampoline...

First off and before I get a lot of really angry messages from Mac 25 owners, I think that the Mac 25 is a great value for the money. Just don't go sailing offshore for too terribly long. The film thickness on the gel coat is relatively thin, BUT, for daysails and short trips (and on inland lakes)it's not a bad deal.

They Sail OK

It is not a light air boat! Better put your water in in heavey air! It is kind of plain inside. I does sail ok! It is cheap! Under motor it goes 22 MPH...NICE!!!!! It is not for me. I am a purest! I have 3 boat, San Juan 21, Sunfish, and Hunter 28. BUT IT IS A DAMM NICE BOAT!!!!!

Mac26X

The Mac26X has served our needs nicely for the last 2years. Sure, there are better boats but for the money, the performance is good. Nice to be able to anchor in shallow spots too where most boats can't get to. We will be looking at Hunters soon only because we want more beam and more cruising capabilities. Enjoy your Mac and that is the bottom line for all of us sailors. Pete ~Manido~ Hobe Sound, Florida

So, Walter, what did you do?

Did you pick up the boat? If so, how's it going? If not, what changed your mind? I, for one, hope you did go ahead and get it and have joined our commuinity of sailors.
