Can anyone tell me anything about the web site http://www.calyachts.org ? I tried to email the one link to the "admin" address 2 months ago but got no response. There's no information on who manages it except the name "Ward". It looks like a nice site that kind of petered out judging from the age of the material--yet someone is paying to keep it up and running. Anybody home?

Calyachts.org

This is the website for the Cal List (sign up at www.sailnet.com under the topic of email lists). It is by far the most active list on the subject of Cal sailboats and Cal sailing with 10-40 posts per day. Rog Cal 29 #1 Swiss Navy

Not good enough...

"Rog", the site introduces itself as follows: "This site was started as an offspring of the Sailnet.com Cal e-mail list and is managed and grown through the efforts of the members of our little family". I take this to mean that the site has no official relationship with Sailnet. It is managed by "our little family". Unfortunately "our little family" is blissfully unaware of the very public nature of their web site and offer no information about themselves or how to contribute or take part in what they do. "Dropping a line" to "Ward" as the next paragraph suggests got me ignored big time. I would like to ask that anyone associated with Calyachts.org offer up some information on what you are, WHO YOU ARE (first names like "Ward" and "Rog" without more information are not helpful) and whether the website is an active enterprise or an archive. Cal's change hands all the times and you need to be forthcoming enough for new people to find out how to join your "little family"...

Not so fast

The person answering your question was Roger Jones, who worked for Cal and is one of the most knowledgeable and well-connected persons on not only the history, production and maintenance of Cals, but a leading figure in their refurbishing, modifying and advancement. His answer was perhaps too brief to clarify for you how the Cal-list and other resources work, so you are stuck with idiots like myself to help explain the rather unusual mechanics of them. The main vehicle of the Cal owners group is not a 'site' that you go to. Its an email ring that broadcasts any posts directly into your personal email. When you send any message to the Cal-list address, it distributes the message to every member. To get on the list, you go to the Sailnet site and follow instructions to sign up. Upon successfully signing up, you will begin receiving a stream of email from various members in a very informal style; don't be misled, this group is the biggest, best and most helpful Cal group you will find. Many of the members know and sail with each other; all models are represented. There are some rules and formats to observe, ask someone to send a list to you. There are two conventional 'sites' that augment this. The Calyachts site is used to store some helpful information but is not a very active vehicle as you have found. The FTP site, however, is a standing site and is used by owners to post information, particularly photos and project descriptions. It has a wealth of unique info but is not a communications site. Since the Cal-list itself is an email sender, its protected from viruses by stripping any attachments from the messages. This prevents photos, etc. so they must be posted to the Sailnet site which you can access. Its name is ftp://ftp.sailnet.com/Cal/ . To repeat, finding your way thru the Sailnet menue to successfully sign up for Cal list email may seem odd or even confusing, but the tons of information and friendship I've received have been worth its weight in Monel. We don't like to advocate ourselves on parallel sites, but since you asked... and I also have a Macgregor and frequent this excellent site also. Good luck, hope to talk to you on the Cal-list. Much better!

John, Thank you for your very helpful response. I'm sorry if I was a little short with Roger or anyone else, but I'm not sure that everyone involved with that operation realizes that when the whole world gets to a web site by way of simple word searches on Google they expect those who run the site to realize that they're hanging out there for the whole world to see and interact with them in the normal fashion. It may be a circuitous route to post information at Calyachts.org, but finding the site is a straight shot for the stranger looking it up! I had already signed up for the Cal email list earlier and had to stop immediately--my email box was being flooded with too much material. Forums such as the one Sailboatowners.com sponsors here are a better format and I hope the folks running Sailnet will figure that out.
