I'm a new C22 owner (1984) and a fairly new sailor. Our boat came with a mystery pole that we can not identify. It's about 5 feet long with the clip hook on one end and a nipple on the other. We thought it might be a spinnaker pole, so fiddled around trying to fly the chute with it but no luck. Is it a jib pole? Is it the proverbial sharp stick that no one wants to be poked in the eye with?

Thanks!

Great Question!

I use mine to untangle halyards from the mast light. I think it's a job pole. Anybody have photos of how to hook the darn thing up?

Chances are, it's a whisker pole. Sounds like it. Same as a spinnaker pole, but different, haha. But you put the clip end on that loop on the front of your mast, and the pointed end through the clew on your genoa.
The only times it is used is when you have the wind abaft of the beam, basically almost DDW.

It helps "pole out" the head sail, to catch more wind directly behind it.

I broke mine just yesterday, and I'm still bummed by it...

Yeah - we broke the plastic nipple off the end fooling around with it. I love Supermend Epoxy by Goop. It will stick anything to anything for a really long time. I glued it.

Man. I broke my hook end, and the snap slide went overboard, along with the rest of the pole. I didn't have it sheeted quite tight enough, and when the clew end popped out, it hit the deck, and in the process broke the mast end. It was REAL special coming about to retrieve it, which I did. But I got the attention of the Coast Guard, who was escorting a munitions carrier from Sunny Point. I got straightened out, and this turkey comes FLYING over to the boat, to tell me that I needed to stand off 500 yards from the ship. I made no friends that day. I "politely" informed this high school kid that there wasn't 100 yards between the carrier, and the lee shore, and I was between them. Hell, The Cape Fear River ain't 500 yards wide. I told him also that I was just your average terrorist, running around in a 22 foot fiberglass boat, with a 6 h.p. motor, ramming into the sides of hundred thousand ton container vessels, and other bloodthirsty crimes such as that. Every kid on that boat was giving me the stink eye. There is where ONE TRILLION DOLLARS of your tax dollars go, for "homeland security".
Just another bright sunny, Sunday; in beautiful Southport, where all of us bleary eyed criminals live..

Be careful Mate. The Coast Guard doesn't seem to have much of a sense of humor anymore. Not like they ever did to begin with. But I've heard that since 9-11 & the USS Cole they don't play at all. Although some of the crazy crap that I see powerboater/stink pots get away with, its a wonder that they even bother to look at a sailboat!

I can't support your behaviour in this issue....... get your ass out of the way... these guys have a job to do and they don't know you from Adam. A bomb can fit nicely into a 22 foot boat btw. Please do not disrespect our military...... many of whom are kids.

I used to go to Southport a few times a year to discharge molasses tankers @ the ADM terminal there. I will say, this part of the world os very beautiful and some very friendly people live there. The strong current in the Cape Fear river would give us troubles in reading the ships draft and it seems like every ship would pop a line or two at least once during the discharge.

There used to be a sandwich shop at the "T" in the road were you turned to go into Southport proper. I can't recall the name, but they made some good sandwiches!

I hope to get back there someday.

Hey C.J. Southport probably hasn't changed much since you've been here. That sandwich shop is Famous Pizza & Subs. And you're right. I've been all over this country, and 22 more, and there's nobody makes a better pizza or sub, love the place. The people are Greek, and the matriarch still cuts the veggies by hand, and can barely utter a word of English.

Yeah, this river is REAL bad. It will let you know very quick whether you're a sailor or not. I've had my ass handed to me a few times out there. 'Bout every 2 months or so, some dummy will decide to go swimming in it, but they don't get to tell about it. Everybody gets to read about it though. Vicious.

A.D.M. is right where you left it. In fact, now that you mention it, it was right on the end of their dock where my "encounter" was. I was trying to get into the Deep Point Marina, to visit some friends there. And, to look at a 50 foot boat I'm currently debating.

Yeah, this is a quiet place all right. Retired folks, tourist, and oh yeah, us terrorist. I'm still wondering how, or if to respond to that nuttiness that someone posted earlier about my remark, (which I still stand by).

I sorta doubt I'll bother...

Hi Chris,

Yeah the current runs fast there! It made our draft survey of the vessel in error most of the time as the current made the fwd and aft drafts artificially high and the midships falsely lower.

Yup! Famous Subs! Awesome!

As far as you other comment, I find it best not to feed the trolls. There are trolls on every group and as tempting as it may be, I never feed them.

Good luck!

You should have a mast eye on the forward part of the mast, about 2-3 ft up from the deck. One end of the whisker pole attaches to it, and the other end attaches to the clew eyelet of the jib. The whisker pole's length should be adjustable for the size of your Genoa.

Ok I think I know what you're talking about. I'll try it out today!
