Neptune Decides!

When one is cruising to different geographical locations, one waits for weather windows so that the seas are calm enough to sail in. 30+ knots means to stay put. But in general your point of land destination and sea conditions determine the point of sail. Life for the daysilor and for the open blue water cruiser are very different. One is not better than the other, just very differtent.

any point of sail

Hey, I feel that any point of sail is a good one as long as the boat is moving on her own. There is something to be said about having the rail buried and screaming along. But just as nice that reach between islands, such as in the BVI or TONGA.Happy sailing

Favorite point of sail

I don't have a favorite point of sail. I just use whatever is necessary to get where I am going as easy as possible. Pointing is great from time to time but it's a lot of work, where a broad reach is fast and smooth. But this is true only if you are headed in the right direction, like the old saying "I don't know where we are or where we are going but we're making really good time!" Tom

With a Nonsuch...

...reaching and running are what most people assume is the best you can do. While that's true for the most part, the boat works upwind quite well. The boat is very deceiving. My favorite point of sail? Well, that would be a toss-up between reaching and running. Cheers, Bob Nonsuch 30C #77 Lazybones

close hauled

I like to play with pointing as high as I can and going as fast as I can upwind. It is fun to just set the sheets on a nice reach but more fun for me to play with it upwind.

beam reach

Ah, the exhilaration of pushing 8kts on a 20kt wind on the beam.

The great thing about sailing

without a destination is you can do what suits your mood. You can point her up and work your butt off to windward for a while, then turn down a little, lock the wheel, and relax, then turn down some more, wing out and concentrate, but without a lot work. Work off some agression, then unwind and relax.

Reaching!

For comfort there's nothing like a Beam Reach. Running is least favorite. Broad rech would be good, if I could figure out how to do it and get maximum speed. Close Reach is OK and Beating, if I have to to get somewhere.
