Foam Luff, AeroLuff, or the new RopeLuff on Doyles Jibs/genny's Why the different types, what are the advantages and disadvantges of both? What type of sailor would purchase the different types?

Roller Reefing Systems

Tom, All 3 of these systems have the same goal in mind, i.e. to keep the roller furling headsail flat when it is partially rolled up or reefed. The SeaFoam that we use works on the same principle as the ropeluff in that they both create a roll that is greater in diameter in the middle of the sail and thus sucks up more cloth per turn in that area. Since the greatest camber or depth is in the middle of the sail it stays relatively flat. The foam we use is high density closed-cell foam with a taffeta covering that is not cheap. It does not compress over time like some less expensive foams tend to do. Rope can be used to bulk up the luff area in the same manner. It is a less costly way to do it but results in a less aerodynamic leading edge. The Aero Luff system is more aerodynamic, more adjustable, and more expensive. It is a zipper luff sleeve with an enclosed luff tape. The luff tape can be trimmed down at the top and bottom(this is the adjustable part) so that when the extrusion is turned, the middle of the sail is pulled about a turn or so before the ends start to roll up. All 3 sytems work well. Racing boats will often choose the Aeroluff. We think the SeaFoam offers the best cost/performance for cruising boats. Bill Colombo, Doyle SF
