What's the fundamental difference between the 340 and the 336. In the UK the 336 is category B, while the 340 is category A but can't see what the difference is!

334-336 Differences

I have the 340, the next slip has a 336: Rating: I think you need to contact the factory for specific reasons why one is an A and the other a B. It may be as simple as the factory did not seek the A rating for the 336. After that, I can state that the 340 appears to be faster, has a different hull, different keel, different mast configuration, etc. All this may affect its righting moment, etc. But again, why not contact the factory and get an reliable response. David, would you please post a brief note on what the factor rep had to say about the 336 and 340 being differrent? the sail area and a few minor difference (mast height) are some difference but would be curious to know what hunter had to say thanks Pete

340 is the way to go

The 340 is a much better new and improved model of the 336 . I've sailed on both and found that I prefer the 340. I highly recommend it to anyone "boat shopping" for the first time or a seasoned sailor looking for the perfect boat for coastal cruising or to the islands. The 340 handles great with one person or a couple.

More Differences

The 340 has an Arch and the 336 does not. On the 336, the mainsheet usually comes into the cockpit attached to the console or cabin top. On the 340 the mainsheet and traveler are overhead on the arch. Makes for better movement around the cockpit and you are able to have a bimini which is attached to the arch. The hull shapes are identical though.

smaller cross section

The 340 mast has a smaller cross section. This probably reduces the weight aloft improving the righting moment that Jim referred to.

Thanks

Nothing from the factory yet, but I'm sure I'll get something soon. Thanks for all the comments. Bit of a non-issue now. I saw a 336 at the weekend and bought it!

David's new boat

David, Good Luck with your 336! Good Choice ! We also have a 336 and think the boat is great! I could only see minor difference in the two boats (biggest dif being the sail area but not a major issue for us) Would still be curious to know what Hunter had to say. Good Luck! Pete

Hunter's response

I got a reply from Greg Emerson (Thanks Greg). He says: 'It was only a case of paperwork. The 336 was built like the 340 however at the time we had just begun with the CE certification and chose to ask for a "category B"' So now we know. Having sailed both I can say they are each great boats. We had a look at a few others last weekend, but the Hunters are head and shoulders above anything else we looked at. I was lucky to find a particularly well equiped boat as well. David

Struts at base of mast

Took a trip to the lake to check on the boat. First time since before Thanksgiving. Since there is a 336 down the dock from my 340, I took time to look at the differences, most of which have been mentioned already. But, I did notice that there are struts at the base of the mast on the 340. Improves mast stability, I suppose, but they also make terrific hand holds while walking the side decks. David, we looked at a 336 before buying the 340. It was/is a sweet boat. You've got most everything that is on the 340, but a shorter hull warrenty if it is in warrenty at all by this time --- and best of all you saved $10 to $15 large. That's a significant difference in the two. Best of luck and congratulations. Wynn Ferrel S/V Tranquility
