Whats the best windlass for my boat ?

I have a 323 and used a Lewmar 1000 horizontal shaft, though you could use a 750 according to the specs. I was able to get a decent discount and figured the beefier 1000 would take some abuse and last longer. Does the 321 have a shelf in the anchor locker to mount a winch? I HAD NOT YET SEEN A FACTORY SETUP ON A 323, so had to research a little to make my choice. The desired angle of the rode to the windlass should be horizontal or (better) uphill from the roller to the gypsy. Helps grab the rode., though not so much important with rope rode since you can give it several wraps, but you need every bit of chain/gypsy engagement as possible. I mounted mine on a block to raise it as high as possible (and still be in the locker) to get a batter angle for the rode.
Ron , There is a smallish shelf in the anchor locker. I would imagine it is similar in size to the one you have on your 323. I would entertain the idea of drilling a hole in the locker lid to have it mount up even higher but was hoping to see a pic of one already done that way and get some feedback on its operation. Any ideas ? Does a 323 have 3 births ?
http://www.beneteau323owners.net is a 323 web site we started. 323 has the vee, and a very large aft cabin berth. Maybe other boats have the hole in the locker lid so the windlass is effectively at deck level, but I wonder what a person would do if the rode ran above the lid and you had to get into the locker quickly?
I have a Lofrans Airon 1000W on my 2002 Beneteau Oceanis 361 if this helps. Attached is a photo.

I think Ill call Beneteau today and see if they have any recommendations on what to use. ( If the phone lines aren't froze up). I'm in Houston and its supposed to get down to 18 F. Go figure. Ill bet its nice and toasty in Anchorage Alaska.
