I am thinking of upgrading to a hydrostatic automatic inflatable PFD. There are a number of brands, but not sure of reliability, safety, comfort, value, etc. Would appreciate any experiences, thoughts or suggestions. thanks

We sprang for two of the Mustang hydrostatic inflatable PFDs. Mine has a harness, cos I'm more likely to sail on "harness" days.
They're fairly comfortable. We're used to them now.
The Spinlock Deckvest is apparently very comfortable. Also well-made, also expensive.

I'm always amazed at these "what's the best of..." questions. Everyone has their favorites and for good reason: they work for them. I recommend that you simply go to a store and try them on and see which one fits YOU and your body the best. After all, you're the guy who has to wear them.
They all pretty much have the same air delivery systems, so that's not really an issue.
I'm still wearing our way old West Marine ones and we have backup/spare cartridges and tablets for them.

That disclaimer is on there because of the possibility that the pfd won't auto inflate, in which case the user would have to pull the lanyard, and if that failed to deploy, the user would then have to expose the inflation tube and fill up the bladder with their breath. Pretty difficult to do if you can't swim and are fighting for your life.
