Annual cost

My annual costs... Yacht club dues & dockage $1200 + Insurance $400 + Haulout/winter storage $550 + yearly maintenance(cleaning/painting/engine work/etc) $150...barring 'surprises' + anything else you can think of to do to or for the boat divided by 12. Then add 10 - 15% just for the hell of it! :)

It has been said

that if you have to ask you can't afford it. With our first boat (Dawson 26) we kept meticulous records, noted down every dime she cost us over ten years or so. Clearly, we couldn't afford it. That was so discouraging that when we bought our present boat, a 37 footer, we have just as meticulously refused to keep records. The bills come in, we pay them, somehow. However, here in Manhattan we proudly tell people that it costs us less to own a boat than it costs them to own a car. Our boat insurance, which is both loss and liability, costs us half what our car insurance does, which is liability only. Our monthly payment on the boat mortage is half what it would be on a decent car and the interest is deductible. To garage a car costs about $400 a month, or the equivalent in parking tickets and vandalism damage. Our slip and winter storage does not cost that much. And so on. And of course, when all else fails one can live in relative comfort on the boat which you can't do in a car. We do own a car. But it is a 1981 Mercedes diesel with zero residual value. Older than the boat, which has a lot of residual value.

Annual Costs

Depends on where and how you boat. I have a 27' Watkins and own my own mooring so I don't have slip or club fees. I store the boat at home so I don't pay storage. My annual costs look something like this: Mooring Service $90 Mooring Permit $40 Haul/launch/transport$600 Misc maint$500 Cover & Winterize$100 Insurance$500 Fuel $50 TOTAL $1880
