What's it worth?

I have been asked if I would like to make an offer on a very neglected mid to late 70's Oday30 that is in the slip next to my H260. I have always thought that the boat has a lot of life left if resurected, and as a finish carpenter i have the ability to get her back, but i don't want to pay alot for her as she sits. I'm hoping to get some feed back on a fair price to offer.
She's had water in her at least three times above the cabin sole, she's been sunk once for two days. The motor was professionally repaired after the sinking but it hasn't been run in at least two years. She has a roller furler, but no head sail. She has a main, condition unknown. The standing riging looks good and the spreader bars look good too, but all of the running riging needs to be replaced. She hasn't left the slip in six years and is overdue for a bottom job. She is in freash water though. I have no idea if the motor will even turn over, but i'm sure the fuel tank needs to come out and be cleaned. She's covered in mildew and needs a good cleaning, but like I said I think she deserves a chance that she wont get unless someone desides to love her again. Any input on a fair price would be appreciated.

look at ppor condition prices on the net, then subtract for condition per the above. For a 30ft, I would think sub $3k per your descriptions?

make an offer of $1,500.00 and see where it takes you ...what you got to lose....

There was a 30'-ish somethin' or 'nother (Ericsson maybe?) wasting away near my father-in-law's boat a couple of years ago that was probably in similar condition. We couldn't remember the last time we had seen it move.

The gentleman that owned her was in ill health and ended up giving the boat away, if for no other reason than to get out from under the moorage payment.

So, that would be my initial offer - free. In the case above, it saved the PO about $300 a month in moorage, and he was happy with that much.

You can always go up if you feel it's worth anything, but you can't go down.

From the sounds of it this boat has had a rough life and is in ill health its self. Advise the current owner that the cost to bring the boat up to sailing condition would be more that its economically worth and as such you cannot offer very much so as to have a chance at making the boat a viable investment. Otherwise I would let this nag go quietly into the night and save yourself a few bucks and a lot of grief…lip stick on a pig comes to mind

but have learned a few hard lessons. if you take the emotion out of it (which is difficult), and if the marina and nearby businesses are ill equipped to handle derelict boats, the market value of the boat could be less than zero. I too would start at an offer to just take over the dockage. - and I would still know in my mind that buying a little nicer boat would be cheaper in the end, but might not be able to stop myself!

I ought a O'Day 272LE in much the same condition as you're describing. Absolute neglect for a long period of time. I spent two weeks on the interior dismantling and cleaning. Great experience because I know the boat front to back plus I found a bunch of treasure. The mildewed, smoked up interior is now clean and renewed. Only cleaning the teak in a way that won't strip all the oil and character is next. The exterior now looks like its five years old not 25! I had the opportunity to purchase other boats in better shape but I just liked this one better! I'm happy with my purchase. I don't know what yours is worth but I do know its' convenient, and attractive and cheap. GOOD LUCK!
