WHat's involved in a tranny rebuild?

The Hurth transmission to my XP25 has finally given out (friction plates too glazed). Has anyone had theirs rebuilt & what is involved? Do you have to pull the boat? Do you buy a rebuilt replacement or rebuild your own? Any help appreciated.

What boat?

I don't know what you have, but on my C-36, I'm pretty sure you would have to pull hte engine, since the tranny is bolted on from inside the bell housing. It doesn't look to me as if you could get the bell housing off without pulling hte engine, or at least pulling it forward quite a bit. I would like to know for sure, though.

Transmission rebuild

Todd: It is not that bad. I had mine completely apart a couple of years ago due to a bearing that committed suicide out in the Straits. I pulled the engine to get to it. Getting it out is not to bad. I used the main haylard to lift it out then unbolted the transmission. I got the parts I needed at Doc Freemans. There is also a good web site that has a exploded view of the transmission. I think it is TMI - If you lookup Hurth on the web you will find it. So where is boat? I am at Cap Sante - M dock -

Don, Did you completely rebuild the tranny? Where did you get the manual? Was it difficult? Parts expensive? Thanks, jv

to John - Rebuild

I just needed to replace a bearing that went bad and seized the tranny - while I was in there I replaced the other bearings and seals - It was not to bad for price- the transmission case thatw a cracked was the expensive part. I did not have a manual - I just had an exploded view and really kept track of how things came apart.

While in The water?

I missed if the R&R can be done with the boat in the water and the risks associated if it can?

In the water?

Sure, why not? The transmission is connected to two things: the engine and the prop shaft at the coupling. The shaft stays in place through the shaft log when you disconnect the the coupling per the related link I posted earlier. Good luck.
